You can fit a shallow mount speaker in the front door.
You can find a lot of shallow mount components. I prefer components in the kick panels. Either in Q forms are custom kicks.

When I had my 91 4runner I put some 6x9 in the rear. I had to cut the existing speaker hole to fit the speaker. Also I made a wooded frame to put behind the plastic for a little support. It was a big improvement over the stock sized speakers.

You can check out my audio page to see how I have 6.5" speakers in the doors.

6.5" speakers and a seperate sub will rock your 'Runner.

Corey, i know you said the custom speakers were already in when you bought the runner but do you know about how much those mods cost for the 6.5" speakers in the front? i hate only having these 3.5" in the front, eventhough i've put in aftermarket speakers, they're just too damn small.

Ok today i did some crazy stuff. I took the panels off my back doors . I cut a little off the holes that i found in there and made room for some jbl speakers i had lying around. I didnt want to cut holes throught the panels and add speaker covers so i very carefully dremeled out towo holes in the wood on the back of the panels. The sound travels through the fabric and I now have 6 speakers and one 12 inch sub. Im also going to add two 3inch rockford speakers I have luying around . Im gonna put them up in the back corners by the light in the very back. There are two vents already cut there so all I have to do is make the holes behind them bigger and tada ILL HAVE 8 SPEAKERS. WOOHOO

NRM, I have a page linked from my stereo page above that shows how the pods are put together.

Not sure how much they would cost, but a person who is good at wood working or a stero shop that knows what they are doing could dupe them for you.
