Here's what's happening, I have a radio in my boat and usually get good signal with local stations although I was listening to the radio while piddling in the yard and noticed when I plugged in my phone charger in a separate 12v outlet the signal went almost completely out. Lots of static, I have not noticed this with a spot light (main reason of the 12v outlet).
Wouldn't really be a problem to charge a phone out on the water if need be but is there anything I could do to prevent this?

 

the charger and the radio share the same ground, that is whats causing the interference. beings that its a boat, i doubt you have many if any options for ground points aside from the battery negative terminal. if you do have another ground option try grounding the radio at a different spot.

 

^that and you may need to add noise filters to the power source just to rule out variations in voltage.

 

Yes everything is wired through a fuse block going back to the starting battery. Just thought it was odd the radio has only done that with my phone charger. Doesn't do it with anything else running that's tied into the fuse block.

 

do not question the gremlins of electricity, you will regret it if you do. haha. small phone chargers are hard to keep quiet, lots of high powered stuff and tinfoil inside of them.
