Question radio install query

I want to change the stereo in my '98 runner but after looking at related articles (antenna changes etc) I still don't have a good idea of the steps required to get to the radio itself without snapping off all the little plastic tabs that hold the panels on. ANY help or info would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

According to bob_98sr5, you don't need to take apart the HVAC like I did.

i didn't even have to take the nob off the 4wd shifter of take off that whole panel. I just let it sit there and i could still get to everything i needed to get to.

If you proceed in the proper sequence and firmly but carefully pry the console covers off with your hands and not tools it is easy...
I think the 98 is slightly different (than the instructions on the above link) in that you need to open the lid of the console arm rest and begin by lifting the piece out that comes up the front of the console cargo box.

Pro-Fit International has some really well written instructions for removing the trim pieces. The link below contains instructions for installing one of their 98 4Runner GPS/cell phone mounts, but it should be all you need to get to the stereo.

Pro-Fit 1998 4Runner VSM Installation Manual

Just right click on the link and save to your hard drive. The file is in PDF format, so you'll need Adobe Reader to view it (if you don't already have it).

EDIT: You'll still have to follow the instructions in SLC Punk's writeup, but the Pro-Fit manual explains removing the trim pieces really well.
