you can do it that way or you can run down and pick up a wiring harness for your truck. If you ever decide to sell your truck you could stick the factory deck back in it.

Well its up to you. Having the correct harness will make your job MUCH easier. I think its like $10 at Walmart too. Not a bad investment, but good luck

...and you might also want to search the various head unit installations (using those key words) before you continue.

No offense intended, but I see these 'installs' every day at work and im the one paid to fix them...

If you dont know off the top of your head the oem wiring colors and more importantly how to double check them, do not even attempt it!! Go to wallmart and buy the scoche universal toyota harness or go to Circuit City and buy the Met 801761 harness!!!!! At wal mart it will cost you 8 bux, at CC 15, either way saving you a lot of time and effort.

When you tie the scoche/metra harness to the decks harness, silver solder then electrical tape - none of that butt connector crap!

Big pet peeve struck on this post....

Metra now even makes a "smart" wire harness that requires no splicing for most HU brands.
Plug one end into your rig the other end into the HU - DONE!
Circuit City should have them.
It least use a std harness, that will allow you to tie the wires together at a workbench instead of up under your dash.

Actually at CC we dont have that exact metra type - instead we have car side harnesses and radio side harness that all use the same universal molex. This way when you change decks you only have to buy another radio side harness - the new one plugs into your old car side harness! Very cool, but if you dont buy them in an installation package the pair costs you about 30 bux.

Ive literally done dozens of hardwires on vehicles - I HATE doing it! And 9x out of 10 the fuses are also blown because the person doing it didnt realize that making the ground touch constant will blow fuses like popcorn....

ok Ill go look up the colors for you from our technical database when i get back to work on thursday. Remember to double check every wire with a DMM before ya hook it up to the radio - databases such as these are often incorrect. If you need any help with that lemme know.

As found on www.12volt.com im still posting back with what CC's databases say should it be different. Just be sure to DOUBLE check this stuff could be wrong! Also make sure all 4 speakers are in phase - this is easily done with any 9v battery.

the phasing thing is basically ensuring that all 4 speakers act as one - so make sure your negatives are negatvies and hooked up to negative and the same for the positive. If you are unsure have a buddy look at the speaker, then then place a 9v in parallel with the speaker up by the radio. If the speaker pops out then the positive terminal on the battery is contacting the positive speaker lead and the same for the negative.

Should the speaker pull in when its popped by the 9v, you have the negative speaker lead on the 9v's positive terminal. A nifty little trick most installers use

A DMM is known as a digital multimeter - THE single most handy tool I own. They can be bought at Harbour Freight tools for 4 - 5 dollars and are more than accurate enough for car audio work. They allow you to measure resistance from 0ohms up to several ten million ohms, measure for continuity, measure AC voltage (house hold voltage) up to 600v, measure DC voltage (car use) again up to several hundered volts, can test diodes, and can even serve as small inline anmeters! Ultra ultra useful little buggers. The nice thing about a DMM is that it also has a very high internal resistance so if you probe the wrong wire you wont deploy an airbag, unlike your standard test light.

hehehehe since you were in there, after you resolder on the OEM harness and plug in the metra/scoche harness, you can compare the wires just for comparison sake to see iif you were on the right track.
