My Latest Mod: XM and All that in the Trekker

I'm no wiring guy, I suck..flat out. But a very talented friend of mine pulled my truck in his car audio shop and we went to work on some parts I've been collecting for that "stereo someday".

Here's pics of all of it, minus my dashpad. Getting ready to do a motor swap so the it's a wreck right now.

Here's the dash with 2 tweeters and the XM unit. Gotta have the NASCAR channel at the campsite baby

The headunit mounted in the glove box and camo material all around. Just close the glove box and it's protected. Sorta

Made a small sub box out of birch for this get up. 10 feet of speaker wire and it's a boom box that goes on my hood for camping, parties, or just annoying my neighbors.

Here's the main sub right behind my seat in a box made of birch also. 11"s and has it's own amp...just thumps the seat like crazy. Friggin' love it. The Grateful Dead never sounded so good.

Shot from the rear, you can see the amps on the deck

Finally, the power. These are twin Sound Stream Rubicon 302s. One for the sub only, the other runs the 6 other midrange and tweeter.

The stuff is a hodgepodge of speakers, but love them. RockFord Fosgate's on the sub box-front set I do know. The amps also.

While all that was going on, it was time to build a custom Ignition box. So I went with Jay to the electronics store. Turned out pretty good really. First switch is for the accessories, the second is the ignition, the button starts the truck. Located right above my head on the A-Pillar.

Not a good pic, but you can see the location.

I LOVE this system.

Thanks man They are in the box on the floor. 2 on one side, 2 on the other. It can sit on the hood as a boom box. I've never had a real system before. I'm a believer in good electronics now.

Your ignition set up looks cool. I've always wanted to build a set up like the one in the movie "The Transporter". You type in a code and hit a button and it starts. Did you use relays or just extend the stock wires from the steering console?

Extended the stock wires with butt connectors. The key is no longer functional. Thanks for the props.

Your system is better than 95% of all car's systems on the road today!

Those are Lightning Audio Bolt 3.5" coaxials you have up front there - a lot of people bash LA, when in fact they do make good products. The ones at Wallyworld are their lowest end products but are still quite good.

The sub is a Crossfire sub of some kind. Probably a pre-BMF sub. Another VERY good brand of sub. I love the crossfire BMF amps and subs. VERY well built stuff and sounds good too.

Terk XM commander and a Kenwood deck of somekind. Kenwood I am on the fence about and you cant go wrong with Terk's unit.

And as always it's a love hate relationship with Soundstream (Smokestream if you hate...lol) Even though I've never used one, Im inclined to think that they are quite good.

Looks like a very decent setup you have there!! One question though - why is the kenwood not pushed in all the way into its ISO cage?

And a suggestion if you are worried about water damage on that radio, all of your local CC's have a special marine HU cover thats water tight. Usually runs 30 bux or so.

But I like your system!! And wiring up a sound system is easy, you can most certainly learn with ease!

Thanks man, mucho appreciated.

Bumpin'...Thank you! I know literally nothing about audio components but was told the same, pretty decent setup. I'm not sure why the headunit is like that other than the XMstuff is directly on top..might have something to do with it.

Funny you mention smokestream...I'm going back today to see if one is blown.Already.. Water is always a concern with this truck, will look into that suggestion. Need to do something..like change my driving habits a little

LMAO... didn't even see that. I'm a dumbass, thanks for pointing that out. In that case nice setup... I was going to say something about the lack of carpeting and ask why the HU is in the glove compartment. But now I know!!

Question though: do you have something to cover those amps? Seems that they would get wet if it rained.

Right now I'm covering them each night with a camo-cordura tarp I'm making to cover them up. It will roll back and strap then enclose them when needed.

Update on this:

It's toast! Flooded it today and fried about everything. Ugly.
