Ipod/phone install for 08 tacoma?

Hey all!

I just bought my first 'yota. An 08 tacoma. Was wondering if anyone knows what the best/cheapest install for an ipod/phone was? The grom ipd3 looks good, but is that the best option?

Also, the cd player is throwing an 'error 3' code and doesn't work. Anyone know what this is a/b? And does it have to be replaced before i can run an ipod/phone through the system. Thanks for all the help in advance! Cool site...

i think the grom unit you are referring to is similar to this

the headunit pictured above is from a 2k 4runner - am/fm, tape, cd.

the grom unit looks to connect to the cd changer port and then you connect your mp3 device to that.

you then hit the cd button on the headunit twice to activate/access the mp3 device.

so, i guess the questions are: what is error 3 code and once the grom unit is installed can you access it by hitting the cd button twice with it throwing hteh error 3 code?

if the radio is giving you a cd read error, most likely the lens is scratched or dirty. why not replace it with a low cost cd player that also does aux/usb? you can pick up a radio for under $100 and the parts should run you around $40. or you could order from www.crutchfield.com and they will give you the installation parts needed, at no additional charge.

thanks for the info. I'm thinking that since the Grom unit runs off the cd player it won't do me much good, and i'm not really hip on putting an aftermarket cd player b/c I want to keep the original look of the dash.

Is there a toyota factory cd player that does aux/usb but still keeps the original look of the dash? maybe i can replace my messed up one w/ that...

Search fm mod for iPhone you will come up with a lot of results amazon has a few for about 30 bucks they are pretty easy to put in and they work off of your antenna. I know you might be thinking this is the crappy sounding tune into the frequency boxes but it is a bit different, it goes inline with your antenna and sounds great hooked up to a stock radio. I had one in my work truck so I didn't have to modify it too much. Start researching it and you might find this to be your best option without going aftermarket.

I never had any luck with the FM transmitters. They seemed to work great whenever I was stopped. But once k started moving, the signal would go in and out. No matter what frequency station I put it on, I still had the same problem.

Finally I had enough, and just went out and bought a new head unit. I made sure the head unit I got had USB, so I was able to run a cable from my phone to the head unit. It was one of the best decisions I have made.

My advice, if you got it, take the extra $100, and get a halfway decent radio. Then you will never run into problems.
