How do I remove a 2nd Gen Stereo?

Hi all,
I have been searching without finding.
I want to install a stereo in a 2nd Gen (1995) 4Runner.
I want someone, anyone, to tell me how to get the dash around the stereo apart so that I can do what needs to be done. Installing is not a problem, I am just not familiar with the dash construction. I saw Jason's Indiglo install, but he only talks about the upper dash.

Let me know!
Thanks in advance...

on my taco i took out all the screws i could see, but it wouldn't come off, i later found out (luckily before i broke it) there were a couple screws hidden behind the climate control face, pull the knobs off and get a small screwdriver or something similar to pry it off with, take out the screws and it should pop off

do a search on my name.

I have done a loooooong description of how to do it.

You will need a #2 philips head, and a 10mm socket and there are 4 screws and 1 10mm bolt anchoring each side of the lower dash. Yes they must come off first....

*on the driver's side, pop off the ignition switch trim piece(pull straight out);
*remove 2 screws from the right side of the driver's lower trim piece(around the "e"-brake);
*remove 2 push-in type plastic fasteners from either side of the front of the console lower dash trim piece by pushing in on the center pins, then carefully prying outwards on the outer rings(a thin pocket knife blade works great for this or a handy "leatherman" multi-tool), then remove;
*now on the passengers' side, remove 1 screw from the lower left-hand side of the glove box & 1 10mm bolt from the lower right side of the glove box(down next to the a-pillar kick panel);
*open the glove box & remove the 3 screws found along the top edge of its inner lip(left, right & center)&, holding onto the bottom of the now open glove box with your left hand & the top of the glove box's inner lip with your right while leaning in the passengers side door across the seat, wiggle it up & down while pulling out until you feel it free itself, then balance it in your left hand while you reach in over the top of it with your right hand to unplug the glove box light harness(center) & the passenger side speaker harness(right & at the rear of the factory enclosure), finally giving that now tired left arm a rest by setting the unit in the rear seat to keep it out of your way;
*remove one screw(it could be another "push in plastic fastener")from the lower right corner(while still leaning in the passengers side door)of the center dash/console(where the glove box meets the dash), if the earlier screw removal was'nt the same, & now while sitting in the passenger seat, carefully remove all of the climate control knobs &/or buttons, followed by the trim piece, exposing the 1 screw at the top right of the climate control assembly, which you will also remove;
*now put your key in the ignition & turn it to the "on" position(do not start!)so that you can shift the gear selector lever down to "L1"(if it's "auto"), or put it into 2nd. or 4th.(if it's "manual") for the space you'll need to pull the dash trim piece away & disconnect the clock's harness, which should now allow you to remove the dash section that holds the radio by gingerly pulling it directly out towards the gear shift lever while lifting a little to help maintain its height when seated until it clears the dash, then rest it on a folded towel on tne lower center console(to prevent scratches);
*doing this will now expose the 4 screws(2 on either side)that hold the radio in it's support brackets. remove them, then pull the radio further out of the dash assembly until you can disconnect it's wiring harness & remove it.
*installation is the reversal of the removal, with the addition of mounting a separate "din" trim pocket beneath your new "din" radio(unless you plan on using a "double-din" assembly, then it's a little easier to mount).
good luck & i hope you find this to be of some use,
later,
frankenrunner

Some great info. I knew it was out there. This is obviously much more complicated than the install I did on the 3rd Gen. Hopefully I will tackle it later this afternoon.

Thanks grl, superjoe, b.y. and Topher, that link is a home run! That is a definite bookmark site for anyone interested in installing!

The install went well.
The instructions everyone gave worked out great.
Tophers link with tons of pics was especially helpful.
Popped off the dash in about 10 minutes and was hoping to use the harness that was in use with the old Sony unit in place. Evidently it was an old style so we trucked down to get the correct harness. 15 minutes after coming home with the goods, it was complete. Thanks all! Yotatech and the techies that reside here rule!
