Help: Professional Opinion Needed!
Hey Guys~ now le me quickly explain my story then Ill ask my questions…thanksIn my 91’ Toyota Ext. Pickup, I have put a 3-way a/d/s component system in it with 2 JL 10W3v2’s. My Amps are a JBL 600.1 for the sub and an 8ch. a/d/s amp. All of the speakers came out of my last car; the speakers themselves are at least 5 years old. And I have an Alpine CDA-9835 reciever.
I spent about $1100 dollars last October having a local car audio place install, and I just haven’t been that satisfied. Amps mounted under the rear seats were bouncing around as well as distributor blocks bouncing.
So I went in today to have them set me up, only to find out some beautiful news. Apparently, my door mounted 5 ¼ a/d/s 335is speaker is blown, as well as one of my tweeters. The other tweeter is beginning to crackle so I know that’s going and my right side 5 ¼, which I am sure is on its last breath.
As you can probably understand I’m a little heated right now. I have spent WAY too much money on install and it doesn’t even work. So I asked the guy what he recommends, he said just get a whole new system. He said he recommended the MB Quarts, he said that a/d/s sounds nice, but you can’t really crank it too much. He said don’t get Alpine; he said if I were to look at Alpine, get the top of the line series.
Here is what I need some help with guys, starting with the speakers, I have a place that I have made for speakers in the rear of the cab, so should I get a 3 way? Or 2 way? I don’t know what size to get either. I need to know where I can find new interior door panels because I chewed them up doing my own install earlier.
I am looking to spend around 500 dollars for the components. Next I am looking for (1) sub. The two 10W3v2’s are leaking and taking up too much space in the back seat. I am going to now look for (1) 12” or 10” sub that will sound really clean with my 600.1 amp, and will keep up with the kick ass components.
I want to know what brands professionals recommend, I don’t want some ricer music coming from my truck, I want some kick ass, roll down the music, I can hear you 4 blocks away, sound!!!
Id likes to know where about on the internet I can buy this stuff. I am very familiar with crutchfield, sounddomain.
I have been reading about capacitors and alternators, etc, and I still haven’t gotten a straight answer. When bumpin’ the tunes, my headlights dim (duh). Can it be a quick fix with a capacitor? And NO I don’t want to get one just to look cool.
Well Iam pretty sure that’s all of my questions for now, I appreciate you all taking the time to read this and maybe answer a question or two.

For speakers I recommend Diamond Audio HEX series if you cna afford them, or the M6 series. (Im using M6 in my system)
FOr subs I recommend DIamond AUdio TDX if you can afford that, or the M6. (Im using M6 in my system)
Dimming: How much do they dim? If they dim a little, a good capacitor will work. I recommend an Xstatic MegaCap 150 (50 fared, same as 50 of teh common 1 fared caps) (WHich Im using in my system). If they dim a lot (or you feel your cylinders are missing since theyre not getting the power to the coils), an alternator is needed. Better yet, get an alternator AND a MegaCap.
THe Diamond Audio stuff MUST be purchased at an authorized dealer. THey prefer it if you see the product before you buy. www.diamondaudio.com
The MegaCap must be purchased from a dealer. Go to www.BatCap.net and check where the local dealer is.
If you have any more questions just ask...

Alright cool, now what series in the HEX and M6 category do you recomend? What size package, it looks like they are a 2 way...is that all i need? I have an 8ch amp, so 3 ways could fit.
Dimming: They only dim a little bit. Sounds like a Cap is what i need.
Whats your experience with Diamond Audio? Are they just "okay" speakers, or will i turn heads... if you havent guessed, im looking to turn heads.. haha
Ill check out the diamond audio site, how much am i lookin at for the componants..
SUB: What wattage RMS is good for the Diamond Audio to go with the 600.1? I mean can I get a 10" in a higher category? Im just kinda confused about that. Also what kinda box should i make?
Thanks for the quick reply!

I have to check the prices oin the HEX/TDX series (top of the line), but the M^ are as follows:
M661 (2 way 6.5" woofer component system) $235/set
M6mkII12D4 (12" Subwoofer) $205/each
Just look at the size you need. Choose the one thats right for you. IMHO, 2 way and a sub is plenty. No need for 3 way unless youre going for MAXIMUM SQ. The Diamond HEX series has a 3 way option.
The 12" M^ woofer can handle the 600W (thats recommended). Im using one powered by a 600W amp.
I like Diamond Audio because not everyone has it. Its very good on the SQ scale, and good on the SPL scale.
The single M612D4 will give you enought bump for it to be felt, but not enough to rattel your car apart. Overall, its a VERY good sub...

Your on the money with Diamond Audio, they are very good. Near the best IMO, if I knew them when I purchased my system I would have purchased the HEX's as well. Another solid brand is Focal.
As for your power problem there can be several causes, it depends on the current draw, your battery's capacity, your alternator's ability to keep up with demand. If it is only during peak current draws i.e. when your subs hit hard then a capacitor sounds like a solution. If it is nearly all the time it may be your battery/charging system's inablity to keep up with the demand.

You should upgrade your wires under the hood to a lower gauge wire like 4 or 0. Alt to battery, battery to ground, and engine block to ground. You can keep the existing wires there and just add these new ones. This will ensure that the your electrical system will have the "ability" to handle the higher current draw that your amps are demanding. It''s kinda like a small coffee straw vs. a big McDonalds straw, you try to sip say 2 ounces of liquid through a small coffee straw it might take you a little while to finish it. But that same 2 ounces would be sucked up rather quickly with a big ass McDonalds straw. That's because the bigger circumference of the McDonald's straw allows for more fluid to pass through, somewhat like 0 gauge wire. Stupid analogy, but I think it suits. You have to allow the current enough room to pass through the wires. If this does not resolve the dimming, then your amps are demanding more juice then your alternator can dish out. But for a 600 watt amp you shouldn't be drawing that much from your Alt. I think in your case a 1 farad cap will help, but the thing about caps are that they too demand constant attention from the alternator since they constantly are being discharged and then charged from the battery.
I had to get a 200 amp HO alt, and an Optima Yellow top for my dimming issues. Try ebay for your door panels, I have had good luck finding panels for my ride.

So with haveing now only the 2-way system as opposed to a 3 way system, where are we talking about mounting the mid basses? As of right now with the 3 ways, i have (2) tweets in the dash, (2) 5 1/4 in my doors, and (2) 6" in the rear of the ext. cab. Where will i be mounting the new 6" mids that will come in my new componant set? In the doors? or in the back of the cab by the bass..?
THanks again.

I personally would put the Midbass and tweeter in the Kickpanel. I like it there. the Imaging is good, and I dont have a high powered tweeter 2 feet from my ear.
Umm...If you want, get the 3 way conversion witht he HEX series, then put those out back.
For pricing on the HEX series, and FOR PRICING ONLY, DO NOT ORDER FROM THEM OR ELSE YOU WILL NOT HAVE A WARRANTY, check out www.onlinecarstereo.com

NEVER use a cap to solve dimming issues!!!
The first step is always upgrading your big 3 wires with 4ga or 1/0ga.
The next step is making sure the factory alt and battery are working properly.
The third step is a bigger alt and better battery
The forth step is another alt and more batteries

Here are my recommendations:
Components (Mid priced): Focal Polykevlars or Image Dynamics Chameleon.
Components (Higher priced): Focal Utopia or Dynaudio System 240 MkII
Sub: Illusion Audio ND series
These components are absolutely clean sounding and offer awesome midbass. I've just switched to the Dynaudio System 240 from the Focal Polykevs. Great warm sound from the Dynaudios.

Okay, so now I am curious as far as sizes of midbass speakers...In my ext. cab pickup, i plan on putting the speakers in the door panels and the tweeters in the dash. What sizes have people been able to fit? I am curently putting 5 1/4 in the door panels....
I went and listened to some componants this weekend, and i heard the MB Quarts Q line. I thought they were nice, but i mean i wasnt too impressed.
Can people give me some componants to think about that are gonna sound so crazy, that its gonna hurt to sit in my car? Lets hypothetically say money no object...
How about top 5 favorite... 1) is least expensive, but still expensive enough to make you wanna sell all of your belongings. and 5) is taking a loan status...
Id also love to see some pics of Audio installs in 89-95 Yota Pickups...preferebly extended cab..thanks
Thanks again for all the replys and hope to hear about some more ideas!!

Sorry I meant to edit my origional post to suggest a course of action....
ID chameleons are some VERY nice components as are the focal polykevs and Utopias. Aside from those, the MB Quart Q series 2 ways are awsome. (I dont like the 3ways.) Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1's are nice too....
As far as subs ALL of these subs will blow the magnets off of your JL's in both SQ and SPL:
www.incriminatoraudio.com <----- Death Penalty 12 or Leathal Injection 12
www.adireaudio.com <---- Brahma 12
www.respl.com <---- XXX 12

But....I am very very interested in the Diamon Audio HEX's.
I went to an audio store and a guy told me to wait till mid Feb, as alot of new stuff comes out then, after some show or something. So I am totaly taking my time researching and saving money.
As for now, the a/d/s componants (whats left of em) still sound pretty kickass, so i can take my time. In the future, i will be doing some interior work on my 91 yota P/U. ext. cab.
I will Be:
Putting new carpeting in
Sound Dampening the entire interior
Building new sub box/(maybe plural)
Installing new componants
1)What i want to know, is how many sq feet, or how many 1 ft pieces of dampening material is necessary for the whole floorboard, doors and possibly ceiling????
2)I'd like to knw what size componants to get, will 6" fit in the doors???
3)Id like to find a place online about sub box desings, or maybe somebody can help me with blueprints for a sealed box for either a 10 or 12".???
Thanks again for the replys from everyone and its a big help.

as far as sounddeadening amount, not much compared to a 4runner...lol I dont know about the pickups, but my yota has a ton of sounddeadener from the factory on the floors....
I would suggest 60-70 sq feet or so....but measure with a tape first to get a general idea...
As far as what size will fit into the door, Im not much help there....best bet is again to measure with the window rolled down to figure max depth.
As far as box designs I can help you out there, or you can use the freeware program WinISD from www.linearteam.org

A couple questions....
Hey guys again, I appreciate all of the replys...I have been gone for a couple weeks doin my SAS on my 91...
Anyways...I am starting to get a little closer to getting this new system moving... but i need to know a couple more things...
When do new lines of componants come out during next year? I heard usually after some show in Feb. Im waiting 'till the new ˟˟˟˟ comes out so i can get something really kickass.
Does anybody else have between an 1989-94 yota ext.cab p/u? because id like to know how many sq. feet i will need for my dampening expedition in a month or so...
Id like to ask if its a bad idea to use two 10" subs (watever ones i end up gettin) and run them in seperate sealed boxes, one for each side of the back seat...
Thanks again for the replys...
