Yes! to the round speaker.

No! to mounting the speaker into the plastic cargo panel.

The same as previously suggested in this thread by myself and a couple others, particularly Bassinfool who has a link to photos of his installed speakers in a 3/4" piece of plywood.

The last x-tra cab I had, I cut out the plastic panels for 6 1/2" speakers. I cut it so the the speaker holes went over the latch knob, centered on the panel, I then put a screw in each corner of the panel. The speakers fit snugly and didn't rattle. I had them in for several years. Now I have the SR5 with factory speaker panels. Getting SR5 panels from a salvage yard is a thought. You just wouldn't get 6 1/2" speakers out of it.

I got mine from Lowe's. It's just a roll of grey carpet (prepackaged, maybe 6'x9' or so).

P.S. Have you done any work on the speakers / mounting yet?

got everything done yesterday. lot of work, but its worth it. it sounds SOO much better than with my 4" speakers alone. i also added bass blockers on the front speakers. sounds really good.

I never said so before, but that's sweet looking! I love how that turned out, looks almost factory. Very, very nice job. That's how I will be doing mine now

Well thanks! I'm really happy with the end product. The only thing I need to do now (2.5 years later) is add dynamat or something because the passenger side has a rattle.
