choosing a new head unit

Well it’s that time for a new Head Unit, I have a 94 Toyota 4Runner. I have been trying to figure out what I want. At first I was looking at the Clarion DXZ745MP or Alpine CDA-9830... then 2005 head units started to come out and the 2004 are discounted (if new model line came out).

Well since I am open to more than just those two head units. Since the 2005 head units are being released here shortly. I am going to start looking again. I am open to anything that is good. I would rather have a cleaner sound than more options.

So here is what the head unit NEEDS:
- Under $275 (no shipping cost or EBay)
- 3 sets of preamp Outputs (Front/Rear/Non-Fader Sub)
- 1 AUX input
- Plays MP3
- Flip down face

Items preferred:
- iPod connection
- Wireless Remote
- Color change
- Screensaver
- Adjustable subwoofer level
- Adjustable EQ

Current specs: HeadUnit – None, Front Speakers - Lighting Audio, Rear Speakers – Pioneer, Sub – Orion XTR, Amp (sub) – Orion CS100.2. Everything is going to change in the next year or so (college student).
What I want in the future: head unit (helping me now), front and rear 6.5” Component, 50-75x4 4 channel amp, (2) 10” Orion XTR, and 1000x1@ 1ohm amp.

since you're looking for a multi-color display id say get the alpine 9831. from what ive read it has the same features as 9830, but a better display. i was actually looking at the same hu, but i need something that will play dvd's. supposedly alpine is supposed to come out with new hu dva-9860 that plays dvds. if you decide on one of the alpines let us know how the time alignment features work out on it.

You can get the CDA-9831 for under $300 shipped and it has everything you asked for and will control an iPod with an Ai interface. It has a fair amount more features than the 9830 including a more complete display.
