Go for the stock pocket from Toyota over the after market one! I did the stereo in a friend's '90 runner, the previous stereo was an absolute hack job (complete with cutting into the dash itself). I tried the metra aftermarket kit complete with brackets and pocket but it just didn't fit right. I ripped it all out and ordered new brackets and the pocket direct from the stealer for about the same cost as the kit (had to wait a day though). It fit just fine after that. I've also used one of the aftermarket kits in my integra and while the stereo mounted fine, I had to take a file to that pocket to get it to seat correctly.

As for the dash cutting done to your rig, go back to the installer and tell them they owe the piece they cut into. There is absolutely NO need to hack apart the dash for a standard DIN stereo install in a Toyota!!!! The work is pretty straightforward, if you are even a little handy I'd do it myself. No one, no matter how professional, will care more about how it looks than you do. It may take you longer than a pro but it will be better in the end.

if you have a pioneer--the face does not close unless you file the top of the factory trim piece. although it seems like you dont have to cut anything, it depends on the deck you install.

Duffdog, I have a crappy Clarion, so the face doesn't fold down.

Ragz, and everyone else, I agree with you and went back to the stealership today to check on the stock pocket and they want $43.07 for one!!!! HELL NO!!! So now what do you think I should do? The part number he gave me was #55521-89101

AbramHart didn't you say a dealership just gave it to you for free? I would honestly by one from you or anyone that can finagle one. How does $20 sound? I asked the guy and my stealership and he didn't have a clue.

help guys

thanks for all you insite/support

I bought mine from the dealer for about $10 two years ago. Since you already have the part number, give this place a call. They have the cheapest prices I'd seen on the net. In fact, I also bought my all weather floor mats from them for $68 shipped. Good luck.

Well that's just freaking' disgusting! I'll call the stealership here on Monday and get a price for that part #. Who knows maybe with a little luck the prices up here in the frozen wasteland of the north won't be so bad.

Youch? I know for a fact that retail isn't anywhere close to 43 bucks for a factory pocket. If you want one let me know, I'm guessing 25 bucks with shipping and that even seems high...I think I paid 13 or so for my oem pocket?

Just a thought here but what about a trip to the junkyard? You should be able to look at pretty much any Toyota truck (or possibly even cars) and pull the pocket from there.

I've thought about going to a junkyard when I have enough spare time to get it, but I honestly haven't seen any toyota pick-ups or 4runners in my local ones. Wonder why that its

Anyway, I'm super busy as it is, so making a deal with someone here that can find it cheaper would be great!!

Rymin929, I would definitly be interested in buying one from you. Is it new, and what color is it... all the regular questions. PM me if you have a chance.

Thanks guys, you have been great. Any new ideas would still be mucho apprecitated.

I checked the yards around Portland when I was up visiting the folks for the holidays and no luck. Called a stealership too and they wanted $35 and would have to order it. I'm open to purchasing the DIN pocket from anyone who has a source. Just let me know.

Erich,
I am in Albany now but I grew up in Medford and alot of my friends went to OIT, so I did a fair amount of partying over there. As far as audio goes I would take the time and head over the pass to Medford. I used to have Progressive Audio take care of everything for me. Can't say that I know anybody there anymore but they were always nice to deal with and could help you out if you give them a call. Tell them your situation where you're located and you need some advice/help. Maybe they could find something for you and mail it to you.

Erich, try PMing TOR as well. He works at a dealership (I think, I know he has access to the parts for reasonable pricing) and he could probably help you out. What was the name of the place anyway???

I just looked at my 87 pioneer install (done by car toys) and I don't see any shaving or anything, and the brackets are the factory ones. Sorry you've had so many problems, and congrats on the new deck! What kind is it?

Rymin, check your PM’s

Steelhead,

OIT is a pretty cool place, out in BFE and the girl population is minuscule, but its not too bad. I’ll head over to Medford when the pass isn’t in whiteout conditions if all else fails. The guy that installed my new stereo in Portland (warranty reasons) was pretty disgusted when I told him what they had done. He offered to fix it all up too, but I had to leave the next day.

I will do that. The place that did it is a small independent shop that I chose because they had an indoor service bay. But in retrospect I should have known better because they barely had a selection of anything. Their set up showing all their decks was bare bones, wires hanging everywhere, most selection buttons weren’t hooked up and all their posters and promotional items were old and faded. I’ll be honest; it looked to me like the guy did just enough business to pay for his habits. I should have just gone over to Medford where they actually have real store chains.

My girlfriend got me sony's 850MP so now I can hook up subs and have crazy play time with MP3's

Decent deck, I just hope it gives you reliable service....I know lots of people who aren't happy at all with Sony. (That was really cool of your GF, most chicks I know hate stereo stuff.)

As far as hacking up your dash, I think I woud have started beating the "installer" with an 8 foot long peice of 1/0....

They NEED to pay for a replacement bezel for you - especially if they hacked it up.

(As far as the hacked bezel - KEEP IT, repair it with glass, sand it down with some 120, then bondo it with a real thin layer, than sand that, make it smooooth like a baby's bottom doing a 240 then a 400 wet sand. Then prime, then sand it with 600 wet, then shoot it with some ultra gloss plastikote engine enamel rattle can of the color of your choice. 5 - 8 layers of that and then 5 layers of plastikote clear and about 72 - 96hr dry time and you'll have one ULTRA shiney trim bezel.

I did my kick panels for my 2nd gen like that. Wanna see?
