1st gen 4" question
has anyone replaced these? if so, did u get 4" speakers or 3 1/2" speakers?
reason i ask is because i went by this whole in the wall auto sound store and the guy there told me i needed 3 1/2 up there because toyota didnt make the 4" inch hole big enough. he than brings out the most crappy generic looking set of 3 1/2s and tried to sell them to me. i don tknow if he was trying to get rid of inventory or if he was being honest. he was a real nice guy so i sort of believed him. thanks for your help!

I replaced mine with 2 different sets of 4" none of them had issues with the hole being too small.
BTW, it's better to get a set that will allow you to bend one of the corner tabs because of the shape of the mounting.

yea he said that's what would happen if i got a 4" in speaker. i guess the 3.5" speaker would fit right in without having to bend it.
btw - anyone have recommendations for 3.5/4" and 6x9 speakers?

I haven't had a problem with the 4" mephis speakers in my truck fitting any of the numerous times that I've had them out, except for the one time I bent the corner bolt tab back to straight like xxxtreme said.
If I was you I'd make a set of door panel speaker boxes and put a set of 6" in, and do away with the 4s.

hey just thought of something, the only thing I can think of with potential problems is the size of the magnet on the back of the 4". If you look how the dash and air vent's are designed behind the holes, I can see how maybe some higher end larger magnet 4" speakers would not fit as they would hit the dash parts behind it, but this has nothing to do with the holes for the 4" being too small.
This is another thing you have to watch out for when adding speakers to the door panels as well.

I know that this thread is several months old, but I wanted to give my $.02.
I replaced my stock speakers with some Polk Audio DB401 4" coaxials and they sound really good. I matched them up with a pair of 6x9s in the back and the combination is perfect for me. I decided to go with them because they had 10 5star reviews on Amazon, and they are marine certified.
I did have to bend one corner to get them to screw in, but the instructions said that that is what they were made for.
For $50, they are the best sound for the money, IMO.

I used some older pioneers that I took out of one of my other trucks. Mounting wasn't hard because I replaced my stock interior panels in the cargo area with ones I made out of plywood. I cut the holes out for the speakers and screwed them into the wood. The set up works for me because I'm not really an audiophile nor am I a fun of a lot of "boom". I just don't like the incessant drone of road noise.

I'm gonna start this thread up again for the sake of not creating a new one. I just blew the front speakers that i replaced a few years ago. They were a pair of 3.5" boss diablos that i shelled out $20 bucks for just to replace my stock ones and they weren't very good. I finally blew them this week and this time I'm going to spend the extra money for something decent. I don't listen to my music very loud unless I'm driving on the highway with the windows down (air conditioner steals all my power) and I read on another thread that the 95 4Runners take 4T speakers but I can't find them anywhere. Other threads I've read say you can just bend the tabs to fit. I checked out the Polks from the post above and if any knows for sure that they will fit the dash speaker spots on a 95 4Runner I think I'll grab those.
Thanks for any help!

they are 4" speakers in the front for sure, you will most likely end up having to bend, or cut off two of the 4 "ears" that mount the speakers. i dont recall 2nd gen runners but i know that is the case on 1st gen's. almost any 4" you buy should fit with little to no modification of the housing.
You may want to look into a set of "bass blockers" or "speaker savers" to wire in with the speakers. they will cut out most of the low frequencies that the speaker cant handle. Those little speakers wont produce much bass to begin with, so it wouldnt hurt to take it out of the equation. should help the speakers possibly last a little longer.

I'm going to get Infinity Kappa 4":
http://www.amazon.com/Infinity-429I-...9729081&sr=8-1
They are $64.85 from Amazon and $129.00 from Crutchfield. They have great reviews. I found a post somewhere that someone had them in a first Gen but can't find it. There is a long thread on them on Toyota4Runner.org in 5th gens.

Check my build thread. I used some cheapy clarions. 3.5" in the front 6x9s in the rear in front of the seat, non factory location and 6.5" mid subs in the rear( they should be 8" cuz 6.5 does thump enough). I went cheapy speakers cuz of budget and that fact that they will probably get soaked.

if anyone has any other brands that they know will fit without messing with the trucks front speaker boxes and are pretty durable then feel free to post them. the main reason i'm asking this stuff is to update peoples opinions as all of the posts i found were from 5+ years ago and nobody sold the mentioned speakers anymore.

yeah, i've seen those but they don't show that they have tabs extending beyond the actual speaker so i'm not real confident about those. i beleive i'll end up going with those Polk's from the above post because they're less than $50 and i can get them straight from amazon themselves. i'll see about the low frequency filters too. they sound like a pretty good idea if i'm spending this much now. thanks all!

These are a lil cheeper, the only difference is the material the tweeter is made out of.

The 4" Alpine SPS-410 fit in the stock dash position on an '87 4runner DLX. They have great frequency response considering the price and size and when paired with a good tuneable receiver sound great before you even hassle with amps or crossovers.

I picked mine up at the Cruchfield Outlet store locally but they have them on Amazon too. I got them installed in the parking lot in about 20 min, after an impulse purchase before a long drive.
