1984 Extended Cab Simple Stereo System

I think the last stereo I installed in a vehicle was back in 93 or so in a Honda XE I was driving back and forth 3 hours to grad school each week. Anyway, a lot has changed since then so I was going to get some opinions from you current techno heads.

From searching Crutchfield it seems my front dash speakers are 4" and the rear behind the seats in the ext cab part are 5" (seems odd to what I could find as everything was 5 1/4").

Anyway, I just want a simple stereo system I can listen to driving back and forth to work and not so my neighbor in the next lane can vibrate when the bass hits. I don't want it to sound crappy either. Weasel and I got to jam to AC/DC while we are wheeling or at least mall cruising.

Just a decent single CD deck and the 4 speakers. I don't need a sub or any of that crap crammed behind my seats making me any more deaf than I already am. I'm open to suggestions concerning brand of deck and speakers, as well as 2 way compared to 3 way. From looking around and installing myself looks like I can get something of what I want for $300 or so depending on what I can find on sale. Any brands to stay away from or any new ones that are good?

I'm a Pioneer guy, 5 1/4's in the doors, with 6x9s in the back should be more than enough. Hit Walmart and see what they got on clearance.

I love Boston acoustics or infinity kappa speakers, but that's gonna put you out of your $300 range. Although I found 4" component speakers on eBay for $60. Not bad for Bostons, and they sound awesome.

Don't hit wal-mart All they have is cheap garbage.

If you are going to bother putting in a sound system, at least do yourself the favor of buying quality components. I have never seen rear speakers in a 1984 Xcab, but perhaps I am incorrect? I have no idea where they would even mount. I don't think Toyota ever made them with rear speakers.

So, you will have to make custom enclosures there. And PLEASE do not just screw them into the brittle plastic. that crap falls apart in about 2 minutes. Is your entire interior stock? Or do you have custom rear panels?

But if they fall apart, I know who can supply him with new panels. Maybe get Huns powdercoated for trade of plastic panels?

I always run pioneer decks though. I have one now that has a USB/iPod cable from the back of it that I ran into the glovebox. I use either a thumb drive or iPhone to run tunes, I never use cd's or even the radio. Just pandora and mp3's on the thumb drive.

Walmart pioneer's ain't all that bad, for just a decent stereo. If subs and amps were in the mix then I'd go somewhere else. But for general jammage...nothing wrong with a name-brand walmart head unit and speakers.

Like I said I don't mess with stereos anymore and on the ext cab I went on what crutchfield said were in the truck.

Totally stock interior that will get gutted and redone stock. Stereo install during this time.

I know it has 2 dash speakers, no clue on anything else cause it doesn't even have a radio in it now. Not cutting the door panels for speakers.

I want a good sound like you get in a factory ride, not something that will rattle the dirt off the windshield.

I found 4 speakers and deck for like 269 at crutchfield, all kenwood

I have had friends burn up kenwood decks, but its their preamp outputs, which you won't be using any of. I think I picked up my deck from onlinecarstereo.com, decent prices.

I got my Pioneer for 134 bucks. (I started going through receipts for taxes today)

I think it was the 4000 ub. Good stereo and I love the little remote with actual buttons. For some reason the ones with a solid skin with buttons built in always crap out on me.

Edit, the 4100ub is 149 bucks. And infinity kappa 4 inchers and 5 1/4 inchers are both 89 bucks a piece. $327 total, I know its a little more then you want to spend, but entry level speakers just won't sound the same.

Those are the same ones Online car stereo has for 89 bucks.

im a pioneer guy. I have a pretty bad ass stereo in my truck currently. but if you're looking for just a factory result. get a deck, and new speakers... amp it if you want to. you'll only need one.
