Texas smog

I'm hearing some conflicting things about emissions here in Texas. I have an 89 pickup and live in Montgomery county. I am having a hard time tracing a vacuum leak in my smog stuff and just want to remove it all if I can before I just end up replacing every hose and component in order to achieve a smooth idle... Does any one know if an older truck like mine gets the smog components inspected during the safety inspection? And if so, what can I remove from the smog system if anything? Thanks.

Lightbulb It's a 25 year old rolling exclusion for emissions.

Link : http://www.tceq.texas.gov/airquality.../overview.html

When I had my '94 Cruiser it had to be sniffer tested here in Harris Co.

So, it looks like yours would still need that for this year and be exempt next year. I think the only emissions stuff I replaced on the Cruiser was the PCV valve, O2's, and a tune up over the course of the 6 years I had it.

Never had a problem passing - the trick was having a fresh oil change before it got sniffed. And, being OBD I, pulling the fuse eliminated any pesky CEL lights from the EGR codes when they decided to pop up.

Since it was sniffed, the stuff under the hood never got more than a basic lookover as there is no way they are going to know what should be under the hood of every vehicle made.

They will charge you for the inspection, pass or fail, but if it fails you have 15 days to get ot fixed and have 1 free retry.

It might be worthwhile to see if it will pass as is knowing that next year it does not matter.

Good Luck !

Britt

Thanks for the good info. I want to take this stupid smog pump off but I probably should wait one more year... I think that I am pre obd 1 so not quite sure what they will check other than just sniffing... Thanks again

I always look for an inspection shop that looks like the building is about to collapse or one way out in the far reaches of the county. They will sniff it but some shops let little things slide that a big corporate shop in town would not. The shop i go to pops the hood, looks for a split second, then closes the hood.

The good news is next year you only have safety inspection. $13

I think I might just keep it off the road until next year. I just got this truck and it has a bad egr and some vacuum leaks making for a bad idle and a pain to track them all down. I think I might just delete the smog and go with the $13 safety only inspection next year... A new egr is like $150 vs $10.50 for an egr block plate... Thanks for the good news though, only 6 months left...

I tried that. Not SUPPOSED to work. The car has to meet the requirements of the county it is registered in.

Too bad. It's such a pain to get it through that test for just the next six months...

Smog inspections are the biggest thieving racket in the automotive world. I just moved to the DFW area from Mississippi, and the cost and complexity of the emissions testing here beats all I have ever seen, especially considering the fact that the whole emissions thing is a giant, expensive placebo for tree-hugging bureaucrats.

You've never had the joy of living in California then. Texas is not bad comparatively but still sucks. I agree with you this is all commie bs. If you live outside of Dallas or houston, you don't have to do it...

Unfortunately, I love in Garland, so I have to find a local shop that will do the inspection. I've never had any problems out of my old 94 3VZE, and I hope a tankful of premium and a fresh oil change will help me make it through this BS without incident.

This will be the very first emissions test I have ever submitted to, and I don't care for it much. It really brings home how badly the leftist tree-huggers have institutionalized their political beliefs into our daily lives. It gives me heartburn just thinking about it.

I just got my truck to 25 years old and now I just have to get a safety inspection for $13, which is still bogus. $13 so they can honk the horn and check the lights. I'd like to see the paper trail of what percentage of that comes back to the politicians who came up with this.

That being said, if your truck has a working egr and catylitic it should pass the test. California is a different story. That place would charge like $100 and fail you because you weren't driving a Prius with a peace sign on it. Good luck with the test. I don't think the premium gas would help, but if you have any oil blow by, the oil change may help. I've heard from some of my buddies that this works.

For the most part Texas is pretty good as far as laws go --except for the smog but that may be a city or county ordinance, as I know it is not state wife. Texas is the best place I have lived, but I am from the west where everything has been corrupted by refugee Californians trying to turn wherever they've fled into another socialist utopia, which they would presumably flee from when they realize how much it sucks. All this stuff just pisses me off --I'm going to go have a lone star. Good luck and welcome to Texas.

Well, against all expectations, the old girl passed inspection with flying colors. To celebrate, I took her home and topped off the differentials and T-Case.

Got 17 miles to the gallon this last tank of gas, so she ain't in bad shape.

Welcome to Texas y'all. I'm glad she passed for you. Once you hit 25 years old then she doesn't need to jump through that hoop anymore!
