require x searches before new members can post

This would probably take some custom scripting, but I think it would really cut down on the 'how much lift to run 35" tires', 'what's the best tire' type threads.

Basically, the new thread button is disabled for new members until they've used the search button x number of times, like 5 or 20 or something. I think it would cut down on the repetitive questions we get every week from first time posters, but might also enforce the 'search first, ask second' type culture we want.

Just a thought.

That won't fly... I'm not a newbie and I've posted up stuff that I should have searched on. I don't know how many times I've seen non-newbs post up something that starts "I'm too lazy to search..."

Besides, what if newb does have a legitimate question that hasn't been answered before? Then they'd have to put in bogus search items 20 or so times until they can post?

Also to find what you are wanting is the search may take day to find when you can post and find out in a few minutes.

I think a FAQ for each gen/truck would be a better way to go about it.

But i do agree that there are to many of the same thread going around, but it is not limited to Q's about rigs, the ones on gas are a good example of that.

This happens every now and again... a certain mod will be all the rage and a lot of people will want in on it. Shortly after I first got on there was someone offering some kind of dealer price on Goodyear MTs. That got a whole bunch of people talking and some people ended up getting tires from other places just because they needed it and it happened to be on their minds. Shortly after that the I/O thermometers, then the ISR, then some SMT thingy (never read the thread) got a lot of attention, after that the Aussie locker, etc, etc, etc...
Take a step back and consider it - with gas prices on the high who wouldn't expect to see the engine improvement mods get more attention? Just a matter of time before someone posts a question about the throttle body spacers, the tornado, or the fuel atomizer. I'm sure we won't see as many lift threads as we normally do if the gas keeps going up. Maybe some more threads on regearing?

Garrett - good for you for doing your homework. I'm sure there's a lot of people that do it only thing is that we never hear from them because they're doing it. Mostly it's from people that haven't that we tend to see all the repeats of tired topics.

Still, it's all good. People got to start somewhere, right? If I wanted to be somewhere that was cruel to newbs and where I could search all the time and get info, I'd go over to Pirate. I stay here because of the better atmosphere and the interaction with good and genuine people. Fortunately, most of the bad eggs find their way off or are removed.

...but back to the topic. Another point I wanted to make was that a lot of this is based on the premise that a newbie to the board is a newbie to the culture. In my case it is. However, there are a whole bunch of guys that really know their stuff that have joined after I have or have way less in post count. 4crawler, Weldpro, Demello, and Krash to name a few.

I can appreciate the concern for the repeated threads but don't forget you were new guys at some point too. Sometimes a gentle nudge in the right direction is all someone needs.

So maybe 20 searches is excessive Maybe just the 1st time a new member hits the 'new topic' button they get taken to a page that explains if they have a tech question they will probably get a much faster & more thorough response by searching first. Then have a link to the tech articles, advanced search, and a 'Go ahead & start a new thread' button.

I'm not trying to be anti-newb, most of the technical threads show me I'm still a newb. Just thinking it's kinder to nudge them before they start a thread, rather than in public after. Not a big deal, just an idea that popped into my head. I appreciate the constructive responses, rather than <--me

I do think a FAQ like Pirate has would be a good idea...the one there has a ton of good info and its easy to get to, one problem with searching is it can be a PITA to actually find something you want.

What about a better search feature index? Is it possible?

One with options like "sounds like"

Or when you search for say "TPS" Throttle position sensor will come up?

I was using the search sometime last week for the Honda Civic video with that "bassbumper" theme music in the background. I looked and looked and I didn't type in "Civic".

FAQ sounds good but let's be realistic... the same people that don't look around and do their homework are the same people that will breeze right by an FAQ. Then again just having one will probably cut down on 1/2 of the issues...

But then instead of saying, "SEARCH NEWBIE!!" and risk being classified as a search nazi, we can say, "FAQ NEWBIE!!!". As far as I know, nobody has ever been accused of being a FAQ nazi.

Let me get this straight... Steve you're suggesting that we say, "FAQ NEWBIE!!!" ?

... and how do you pronounce "FAQ"?

Maybe instead of a high search requirement, you implement a waiting period after registration for starting new theads and posting...something like a week or 10 days..this could also be used in conjunction with a lower search requirement if you wanted...

Maybe another option is for when a "fresh member" enters the title of his thread, the search engine intervenes and shows relevent topics in another window... all ideas..I have no idea about how forums work from the moderators end, so it may be unrealistic.

to bad there isn't (or maybe there is) a way that when you start a new thread, lets say a thread on deckplate mod, that after your done typing and go to post it, it searched for key words in your post. then gives you the top 10-20 threads with those words in it. if after you go thru those threads and can't get the answers you need, you can then finalize your thread and it will be posted. that would be kinda cool. like doing a search without knowing.

As much as people might like to say FA-Q, I don't think that's quite what he had in mind.

It's times like these I wish we were more like pirate...that would make for a pretty good catch phrase.
