Make location mandatory
There have been so many times that I see and have wanted to see roughly where a user is at to provide better responses. I think that everyone should have to put at least a state in their location.

For all you nayers, does it really hurt to post your state? Or at least a time zone maybe... I know a lot of you guys who have/will vote no probably have given away your location before.
The only reason I voted yes is because when someone needs help pulling out a stuck jeep, I wanna know if I can be helpful at all. A timezone for example would tell me either "yeah i can help" or "no, keep browsing".
As far as me...I ditto the last post. I don't really care.

i personally dont want to make it mandatory because some people just want to be as anonymous as possible. thats their right. we could set the state default to YES, but what assures us that someone won't lie to get around the rule?
those people who want ot wheel and be active members will almost always post their location down to the city they live in.

I think it should be highly recommended but not mando. Knowing what state you are from is not going to compromise anyones identity. Don't be ascared mane!
It would be helpful.

Means I have the least to say, but the freshest perspective.
1. I reviewed site for some time before joining, then was to reply and offer a suggestion. Didn't want some 20 mile long form to do it.
2. "Mandatory" is the term and the problem. Also not up to just one site, sort of need to follow the industry. If >90% sites do not require it, the impression is you are more restrictive/"more communist" I think someone said...?
3. I don't have a problem giving my general area/location, and wouldn't think much about the precise location on a case by case. The problem comes in when you don't know *who* or *why* people are looking at you.
4. Paranoia. Yep. Being a long time Internet/computer person (well before HTML and even basic hypertext), I know how easy it is to create profiles on people, topics, locations, etc. The smaller the area, the easier. Probably not a big deal for SoCal, but in my small town of about 3,000, I am the only one with 4th gen 4Runner to date.
Does that matter? Probably not, since I just told you so, but it should be *my choice* to offer the info or not.
BTW, good site, great info. I just/finally registered today.
Again, I don't have any right to say anything about how things are run here, but the majority of posts I read show how helpful and community oriented the users are, so figured I'd help you remember how it was when you were new.

IMO, the state in which you live is not personal info. A street address is.
I've seen it "mandatory" on other popular vehicle forums and i think it should be here, especially with the large amount of classifieds that we have.
But i'm willing to compromise.
* What about a drop-down state location with a blank city box in the first box of registering? I think it should be implemented during the registering process while still letting the member choose. Where it's at now makes it too easy to bypass. It also makes it difficult for some (computer challenged) members to find once they register.

If you want to know, ask the user in the thread or PM them. PM's are better, because the info is kept confidential. It's not worth the risk of identity theft or worse to force users to display their location just because you want to get a better mental picture of how their wheeling conditions are. As for technical responses, if you really need to know, ask. I'm hard pressed to remember a situation where I needed to know where someone was located to help them solve a problem.

I don't think it should be mandatory, but I have to say it is nice to know basically where someone's from... Although my location could be a bit of an enigma to those who aren't familiar with Arizona....

Churnd, What about creating a drop-down country and state location with a
blank city/location box in the first section of registering?
It could be implemented during the registering process but still allow the member to choose.

I honestly don't understand why this is such a big deal.
