I CAN make the images smaller, reducing the file size, and put them in black and white as well.

How 'bout this, I just make a few different options, with your inputs as well.

And, how about a good picture of "Good Times" 4Runner?????

I use Dreamweaver, with Flash, which creates Flash banners. So, if non-flash is what we are after, I could look at Cascading Style sheets. But, then its getting pretty complicated.

Anybody know how to make gifs that would rotate through files?

Or, maybe a script that would run through a bunch of small pictures that are stored on the server......

lots o ideas....

Is that a picture of his up in the current banner?
Thanks for pushing me up to the top there Tracy! yup as Steve has said, that's my stock 4r back in the day

As for new photos... Umm nothing until the end of the year since I've been pretty busy working n stuff. Haven't had any trips and prob won't be doing anything atleast till the first of the year so sorry

I do have to say though that as an alternative, there are other great 4th gens out there that looks pretty damn kick a$$ so don't forget about them too!

since it looks like it's going to be a rotation of images, I don't see why it would be difficult to add many photos of different rigs..

one suggestion would be this:
have multiple header images (including the current one) and just make a script that'll rotate thru the images on each refresh. that'll be simplest way to create something as then it'll just be a javascript code rather than trying to make a banner a set size w/ lots of images embedded. this would be nice as then we can have specific banners that are just geared for like 1st gen, 2nd gen etc etc? or we can even mix it up. heck we can definitely add the non offroadin rigs too as i know we have a few members here with some nice street versions. (don't discriminate!)

i do like the flash concept but like what corey states, people at work don't have flash installed because ppl like me don't give them access to it so that'll be a big bummer

steve, nonetheless it looks cool I like how you used the calender images too

That's a good idea about the multiple header images, Lance.

What every happened with this? Is it still possible to change the banner? My wife does websites for a living so if you guys want I could talk to her and see if she'd be willing to whip some samples up for you.

Let's get some more ideas going here. Here's one I made up quick...

If YT does get a new banner, I vote for making different version of the banner featuring different rigs and using a simple script to randomize them upon page loading.

I really like this one!!! I also like your idea about randomly changing the pics. I have a few ideas too, may give it a shot tonight.

If someone can come up with a script that will run I think without Java or Flash, I can try it out on a test template to see if it works or not.
But if it requires either, we might be able to get it to work.

A rotating one different pics would be cool.

Cool man cool...

You know, since this site runs on PHP, what you are looking for is really easy. You could dump as many pictures as you wanted into a directory, all sized properly, then have a PHP script that generated the image dynamically, drawing from among the available images, with a static YT logo in the middle.

It would be small, just the size of the five images being pulled. It would be fast. And it would be simple, just place an ordinary image tag on the page, just like you are doing now.

Here's a quick and dirty example of allowing the code to do the work for you...
Keep in mind that the pool of pictures is pretty small, so you might see repeats.

(EDIT: Link deleted in favor of the better one in my later post)

As long as all the pictures are sized the same, it will load a ddifferent combination of photos each time the page loads. Since each image is between 10-12k, the footprint is also pretty small.

As I mentioned, this is a quick and dirty example but it could be cleaned up. With this system, you could have hundreds or thousands of images added, it doesn't matter what they are named, and the banner never gets any larger for any single page load When you don't want a picture to show anymore, just delete it from the images directory. To add more, just size them and copy them to the directory. No muss, no fuss...

There are a couple of other ways of doing this as well... I just did it the fastest for a proof of concept.

I like that a lot Rob, maybe contributing members can submit a pic of their rig into the "pool".

That was my thinking. Users could be invited to submit photos of their rigs as they "grew", then as the pool got larger, we would see before and after photos as well as members we have not seen in a long time as they appeared in the banner... I don't really see any reason to delete images, just let the pool grow.

If I were doing it, I would have an upload tool that allowed users to upload their properly sized photos. They would then sit in a holding folder until the designated person(s) could review them for content. That would be done in a tool that displayed many images on a page with checkboxes. When the reviewer was done, they would check the boxes next to the approved photos and hit a submit button. That would move them to the "live" folder and the process would repeat.

At 10k or so apiece, that's a powerful lot of photos before they would become too much of a space hog...

I would also have a tool that allowed the pool of photos to be viewed and sorted on various criteria so that the pool could be maintained when required.

Just my $.02.

This is what we should have. The best IFS non-Tacoma, the best IFS Taco, The best non-Tacoma SAS, the best Taco SAS and the best 4Runners overall. This way it mixes things up. Many members here still have the IFS over the SAS but the SAS is growing pretty quickly.

I like Rob, I will pass this onto Staff later.
Do not know how to make the uploader thingamajigger though, do not even know how to do what you did

But as far as making a pool folder for the pics to go into, that would be easy.
Same folder as the banner is in now, or a new one.

Give me a day... I am working on streamlined example that will load faster and be MUCH easier to use. All you would have to do is replace the current banner <IMG SRC=...> with another one it would work all by itself, no editing to anything else...
