Cleaning up the users list?

I was just reviewing the vital stats of this forum and I noticed an astounding number...

"Members: 11,781"

I know that several of the forums that I am involved with prune their members list periodically so that it more accurately reflects the state of the membership. Commonly, anyone who has not visited for a certain period of time, often one year, are pruned.

Has there been any thought to doing something similar so that number actually reflected "real" members, instead of including anyone who ever signed up, visited once and never came back?

Just wondering.

That is a good suggestion Rob.
We have thought about axing all of the unregged/awaiting on email confirmation users from the list.

We might look into this.
There are some who have not been here in a year or so, then all of a sudden they pop back in again.

I know some forums axe any "unregged/awaiting on email confirmation users" after a specific period, assuming that after a month or whatever, they probably aren't coming back. I nuke those after 30 days on WATTORA, assuming that they used a bogus email addy or weren't really planning on joining anyway.

I can see your point about folks who pop back up after time away. It would not be a nice surprise to get deleted while you were over seas or something, so maybe something like two years is more reasonable. I am betting ther percentage of folks who return after two years of inactivity is close to zero.

Anyway, just food for thought. I was just thinking it might make those numbers more accurately portray the membership here Thanks for thinking about it

I agree.
Besides an accurate number of memberships, it would also help a lot if/when searching the list for a specific "real" member.

if you havent posted in 2 years, then make a new username... the PMs you've saved wont matter to you anyways. i agree with rocket that searching for active members is almost getting to be a pita

Yeah, like me!

Seriously though, I think this is a good idea. Maybe there could be a list of "Total Users" (like what there is now), then have an "Active user" (for people that have posted in the last 30 days or whatever), and then have an "Inactive users" list (for people that have registered, but haven't posted in more than 30 days)

I dunno. Just my $.02.
