Message length is forum-wide, not section specific.

King's point (and I kinda' agree) is that sometimes you just want to show support for something that was said.. but in a short form, just "" to show that it made you smile, or of course "" when you hear about someone trashing their rig.

Now, to play both sides of the fence, I think that finding 1/5 of my screen loaded with a single message that just has a "" is silly.

Maybe there's an option to set the minimum message length on a forum-by-forum basis. So, allow single character responses in Off-Topic, but force something longer everywhere else.

On top of that, ditch the post count all together.
Precisely said.

Nice job - exactly 15 characters.

Would the last two post be post-padding?

Yes! Delete them now! Where is the post Nazi??

Definitely not...it is soo much more obvious when people padd, although Im sure most people do it without noticing. I think most people just want to be apart of the forum and posting lots gets people to know them. If they dont know anything about Tech, its hard to get people to know you...thus padding occurs.

Great, this rule is now going to make me count every post I make that contains short but sufficient phrases.

Just confirmed: There are 15 characters.

I know... but I didn't want to do it twice - that would tip my hand to everyone.

Seriously though, what a good discussion, especially since post padding has been recent topic of discussion in staff.. We will definitely be discussing this!!

what about in the classified section when you want to "BUMP" something? i tried this earlier today and found i had to type "BUMP" more than once. to me it just seemed unnecessary. i think in some cases the 15 character rule must be exempt in certain areas.

All I wanted to know was why the rule had been imposed.

Post padding has never been something that I have done or have thought of doing. So in that regard, I don't have much to add.

From this point on, I'll have to re-word short phrases (that equate to relavant points) to make them fit the requirement for a post submission.

Also, from what has been said in this forum, post padding seems like a big issue; is it that bad?

There was a thread a little while ago where someone mentioned that some of their post #s had dropped some. I think enough people made comments about it (including me) that it got some moderator attention.

15 character limit is piddly - c'mon guys, if you want to BUMP something how hard is it to comment on why you might bump?

I have a check engine light that I still need to get rid of, I'm looking at possibly selling my truck and getting a 4x4 - a little 15 character limit on posts isn't going to ruin my day

I'm only being facetious people, don't take it seriously.

EDIT:
I think post padding can sometimes direct attention away from the main topic of the thread. Mostly though, I think it just gets annoying to some readers

I have a philosophical difference with that. YotaTech is supposed to be a "community". That means that sometimes just showing moral support should be enough. In the same way that you sometimes don't have something to say to someone, but a quick pat on the back says plenty, adding an emoticon as your only comment to a thread can speak volumes.

Judging the value of a post merely on number of characters is as short sighted as stating that someone with more posts knows more than someone with just a few.

I have seen long diatribes that added nothing to a conversation, but I have also seen very succinct posts that pretty well said it all.

You say "Post padding does not equal value", I say that being verbose and padding are not mutually exclusive.

If it's "value" that you want to regulate, you need a formula that is a bit more complex than number of characters.
