Planning my SAS
#21
Whats the best way to go about welding the truss? Should I tack and let it cool and keep tacking til it all meets up? Will that be strong enough? I'm definatly gonna go with a kit though.

from what i've seen and heard, you tack it into place at all four corners. Then sticth weld. So, one inch on the backside close to the diff, then one on the front side close to the knuckle, then one on the front close to the diff, then backside close to the knuckle. Obviously, that is pretty anal, but its what the guy did that i saw, and it seemed to work pretty well. Waited a few seconds between each one as well, a little bit longer as he got closer to the middle.

Look for Marc P's build. He and Napoleon047 have done it for about as cheap as cheap can be. Peter built, Marc bought and pieced.

I haven't seen anything in his other posts that indicate he NEEDS to go farther than IFS other than he's a high school kid who is convinced he needs to run 35's+. Somebody live near this guy and want to show him what a locked f/r stock height truck can do?

I'm a dumb, young kid in the same sport. After going on a few trips with experienced folk, you get the idea that your IFS works fine for your needs.
IMO save the money you planned to blow on a SAS and rubber and save it for repairs and school. If you notice people SAS when their IFS is no longer up the task (i.e. busted beyond all repair from actual use.) You don't make enough money to build AND maintain your broken rig. Some of these guys have more money in a single axle than you're worth entirely.
Spend some time reading the FAQ on Pirate and lurking. Listen to your really experienced people like Flyg, steve, tc, etc. They've done this before and know their stuff.
TC's sig sums it all up best. Wheel every weekend possible. Plans will change.

Stomis,
if you feel that you NEED a solid axle, do yourself a favor,
talk the this 3 guys:
Adrian
Steve
Steve S.
listen to what they say, they know there stuff..
they have gone from IFS to solid axle, and they "wheel" and i dont mean the easy trails either. they have lots of experiance, and know what they are talking about..
When I get to the point of "needing" a solid axle, I will be picking their brains apart, lol
Ive done a little wheeling, here and there, and even I know, I dont "need" a solid axle yet, sure it would be cool, but not thousands of dollars worth of cool. lol
just my 02

Alright I realise that I dont need need a solid axle. My dilemma was that I have the recources to do it amongst friends, I can make the money, and between what I had plans to do for IFS lift, hubs ,ect and the last repair bill I'd already pay for a SAS. I'm not saying I've hit the limits of IFS but am saying it doesnt make sense to put money into something that will eventually get switched out down the road when I do. Why not nip it at the bud now.
TC I know that a front locked IFS truck could do probably everything around here. My problem is that to invest money into the IFS only to turn around and spend more on a SAS when I hit that wall doesnt make sense. Even if I stay on 33's I'd like to go with a better tread without worrying if the next hookup is gonna blow my CV apart. Apart from everything with investing money dont forget the breakage with IFS...
The other thing is that I'm not about to go and rush into it. I'm not saying I'm gonna do it tomorrow. Infact it probably will be a clean 6 months minimum until I order the kit. All I plan on doing now is getting my hands on an 84-85 axle so that the only recource I can't find instantly is in my basement.
