Decided i had enoghu metal laying around that I should make another trailer to help me get trash to the dump.

I had an old cabinet at work that i cut the rear bottom portion off so i commandeered it to be my body tub. At first i was going to keep the box as is for the sides and hack the rear off, but i am gonig to cut the sides down a bit and do it like my other trailer. It will have a tailgate and will have a pintle for the front and for the axle i am going with a 6 lug axle setup to match the yota. Lets see how long i keep this one.



I hope to get the frame done tomorrow and the springs hung, then cut into the tub. After that i jsut have to save for the trailer axle stubs,hubs and pintle. The trailer is going to be be 3 feet wide, 5 foot long and about 14 inches tal (tub)

 

Nice and a good idea. Stout frame. Same width axle/footprint as your rig?

 

IT may be a bit skiniier than the rigs width. But close.

 

Do you think it necessary to run gussets to the outside inner corners? Why the pintle hitch with the length of a wall locker?

Not busting your chops just curious.

 

I am not nearly finished with the frame yet, it is only tacked toggether. There is going to be two gussets in the front, connecting the center to the side rails of the frame.
It will end up like this frame, just differnt materials.


I just like the pintle. Simple and rugged. It is noisy but i can live with it.

I made it. Decided to save myself some fab time by using something already bent up. That yellow trailer took a bit of fab work since i didnt have a sheetmetal brake, it was bent up with a hammer.

 

Nice man!!! Probably a lot lighter than my use to be a truck trailer!

A bit more is done. Pretty much finished the frame except for the front pintle loop and i have to make a landing leg for it. I am going to start on the tub. After that it may slow till i can get $$ together to buy the axle parts. All this stuff is things i had laying around. And i still need bolts for the shackles and spring mount, i threw some longer bolts i had to mock it up.

Got some more done tonight. I cut out the top where the doors hung and got some conduit to strengthen and trim the walls of the tub. I clamped the conduit to the sheetmetal and with a hammer I went around and hammered the lip of the sheetmetal to the conduit and welded it. Didnt take long at all to get it into shape.





Here is the one ugly spot i have, i had to patch a large section of the floor from where i cut out this cabinet a while ago. just tedious. In the end you will see it as being filled but i am not too worried bout it, it is a trailer that will haul stuff. I plan on putting a piece of plywood on the bottom to make the floor a little more durable.



Looking back on the last trailer build this one was much less hammering since i didnt have to make the walls of the tub from scratch.

 

Are you making this trailer to haul around all that cat litter?

 

HEHEHEHEHE God knows they go throguh enough. They make great storage bins for misc parts and such.

 

also used oil...... i have cats too. on the bright side, i drive a yota.

great job so far. idea: what if you put some brackets on the front or sides to hold some kitty clay boxes? (sorry, 100 mile commutes a day give me time to think about random stuff. watch out)

edit- great welding, by the way. what kind of welder do you have?

 

I am using a my old 110v campbell hausefeld mig for the tub and a 220 stick welder for the frame. i may jsut fill up the trailer with kitty clay and have a mobile cat facility hehehe
