OK this trailer should be a "project too long to complete" trailer. I got my axle all together a few weeks ago, but i am only running one tire so it is not leaving my garage anytime soon. I had the tub built but I wasnt liking the tailgate. The metal was thin, and i didnt like it. I wanted a tailgate that hinged down like a truck. I did this on my last trailer build. It worked fine. After going back and forth I decided to change the tailgate.

At first I thought about having no tailgate, because I realized i didnt use the tailgate feature much and I wanted the back of the tub to be a bit more stronger. After much debating, i kept the tailgate but changed the way i did it. I decided to make the tailgate totally removable. The rear corners on the trailer are 1x2 square tubing. I ended up making a tailgate out of 1x1 tubing and put a channel on the sides so the tailgate will slide up and down. So if i need to take the tailgate off, i jsut pull it up and off. With it down, the tub is very strong in the rear section. Just something differnt. It looks like it will work out just fine for my needs.

So what is left is to make the landing leg and fenders. I am going to get the second tire to get it rolling. I have to say it is nice to have the plasma cutter now. I cut the sheetmetal for the tailgate all by hand and it was like butter, boy i never knew what i did before without it.

 

I was thinking about fabbing up a trailer for the back of my 89 ext cab,,, looks great!! will be watching!

 

Today I got my fenders made up. They are not bolted on yet, i still need to sand them down. They are much beefier than my last trailer fenders. They survived the 200 lb test






I am thinknig bout mounting the tail lights in the rear of the fenders. Gonna cut out and install flush mount lights. Next step is to make landing leg and then start final body prep and paint. It looks like i will end up painting it a dark red.

I am leaning on making it a dark red, maroon. I found a rustoleum color i liked at Lowe's today. Plus my little boy wants red. Heck I am pondering to stencil "radio flyer" on the sides.

Well it ROLLS!!!!!!!

Got my tires today for it. I also made my landing leg. Still will need to cut it down and i will get a wheel to mount on the bottom of the leg. Glad I finally got it rolling.

It is the size of the metal cabinet I got. I had an M416 a few years ago and I thoguht it was just a touch to long and to high. So when i built my recent trailers i wanted them to be 5 foot long and about 12 high. I didnt need anything that big. I use the trailers more for garbage duties than excursions. I hope to get it painted this weekend.

 

Looks like the perfect size for a 120qt cooler too. Nice job!

yeah i have to bump the axle forward a bit. That will be remedied.

 

You gonna bring up the sides at all for a tower for a RTT or sumthin?? Some 35's on that think would be sick.

Probably wont do the RTT. A wife and two kids really is a bit too much to put them in that. Pretty much going to be just cargo hauler.
