so I found a bunch of these rings for real cheap , but am unsure if they are cast or forged .. I want to weld them to some 2x2x1/4 and use them for a recovery point kind of thing.

They are pretty rusty so i soaked one in rust remover over night and them used a wire wheel and they cleaned up pretty good.

if you know or are able to tell by the pics please post up ..

I'm not a metal expert by any means...but the seams would lead me to believe that they were cast.

 

Thanks lumpy .. well i am still unsure but went ahead and welded it .. 220 welder on the highest setting..
Now i really dont want to kill anybody out there so , if some one can tell by the welds , id appreciate it ..im gonna keep looking online .

 

try breaking it.

 

drop it if it dent than its lead. like fishing weight is made of lead look to be the same matariel

it is really hard to tell the difference between steel being cast and drop forged after it has been produced. forged is just a bit stronger. what really matters is the type of steel.

 

Since there is no WLL rated and marked on them, they aren't worth using anyways.

yea they dont have any markings on them , the only thing I know is they were used on ships .. at least thats what i was told .

 

TC is correct on that one.

All of the lifting eyelets for tool installs they do at work have a rating on them, all of my recovery shackles do too.

edit: as far as the lead comment, I have never heard of lead rusting

 

A good way to check if it's cast:

Find a piece of mild steel.
Weld piece of mild steel with a few tacks here and there..

If the tacks break loose with relative ease, then its prolly cast..

 

about the ridge, both cast and forged have those. more times then not, cast have sharp edges and forged have blunt, square edges.. but really, try to break it. hook it up to 2 trucks, throw a sand bag over it and pull... you will find out if its strong or not...







OR.... sell them with a disclaimer... something like, I (RMA) do not have a clue how strong these are and may or may not safely do as advertised by my normal disclaimer that is not in effect if the ordered item does not have a receipt on or before the day I (RMA) may or may not have sold said item to anybody in which it caused any injury or other unknown action of which I have no control......

or something like that... with that said, I'd buy one... how much?

 

Those things are huge, are these going to be welded to your bumpers? I would want something a bit slimmer on my bumpers. If you are going to use it in a receiver hitch, why not just buy a receiver clevis? Trail gear has one for $30 if price is the issue http://www.trail-gear.com/miscellaneous

I took this thing to a welding shop today , they looked at it and said it was forged ..then they put the grinder to it and then said its defenitly forged.

They also said not to worry about it breaking .. it wasnt going to break , as long as i was using it to pull on cars and truck ..

Ok now about this work Load Limit thing TC brought up, i was at Home depot today and looked at some of their parts for chains and stuff. some of their D rings said 3500 lbs on the package but had no markings on them at all just on the package. . some of the hooks you attach to chain said 5400lbs on the package and the only markings on the hook itself said made in china.

Yes I opened the package and looked on both sides.

so is this a voluntary thing of what the WLL markings.

i guess these could also be called Lunettes or something like that.


so now I have to drill the 5/8ths hole for the pin..

I've seen a guy use old main bearing caps bolted to his bumper. Not sure what they were from but he used them a lot while we were on the trail and they never broke. I thought it was a pretty neat idea.

 

i might be interested in one if u still have some around just the ring as im building a tow bar and they look perfect for it.

For shame you have not learned the spark test.

I hope you were paying attention when they did the spark test .

One of the best ways to test such things in the field .

I can tell by the sound when tapped with a hammer . But you should have known samples to compare.

 

yea i was paying attention... but still couldnt tell with 100% certainty that its forged .. i guess your looking for the pattern and color of the sparks..

dude theres so much to learn .. im playing with Welding , brazing and soldering aluminum and thats alot to learn..
