I think some lil square peices of indoor\outdoor carpet with 3m double sided tape would cut down the noise from the d-rings

Where do you guys find pieces of steel like this BTW? And how did you cut it - just with an angle grinder?

 

something else you could try would be to dip the d rings in a rubber tool coating like plastidip here. Only problem I can see is the coating wearing off when you actually use the d ring. Might be worth it though.

 

i got mine at the local steel supply place. they sell direct, so their prices are lower. ask if they have any "drops" (the pieces left over after a cut). i found a 5 1/2 foot piece for less than $30, 1/4" wall (maybe 3/8").
plastidip might work, but like you said, it'll wear off. i think they sell a spray-on version, if i'm not mistaken, for touching up bare spots

I went shackles over D-rings because the shackle brackets allow more surface area to weld,,,,,,,stronger. As for theft, I started by keeping the rings removed but got tired of that. They have been hanging from the bumpers for years now and they havent been stolen yet........(looking for wood to knock on now)

 

Thanks for all the comments and interest. I'm home sick from work today so no welding will get done today. I have some urd, I think that's what it's called, that I may look at putting on the bumper where the d-rings make contact. It's like a heavy duty rubber/plastic.
I got my metal from my work. They just had it as scrap kicking around. The d-rings and hitch mount I bought at a local shop.

Like I said before... The hitch was attached to the frame rails and then the bumper was mounted to the hitch. And to think... I towed stuff with this...

the biggest noise issue with the weld on d-rings is not the bottom of the ring (curved part) hitting the metal its the 1/16th-1/8th inch play inside the shackle between the welds. i welded some on the front bumper of my old 89' after about a week i grinded them off and put actual clevis shackles. the other thing with the d-rings is you cant diconnect when your in a pinch cuz your using "someone elses" towstrap that doesnt have hooks.

but other than that bumper looks really good. love the concept using simple design yet strong reliable and clean.

though, if you use bunjee cords, they not only hold the d-ring down to the bumper, they also pull the flat part out and against the retainer. but i can see what you mean, and good point

 

Stayed after work last night in order to do some welding and work on the bumper and the power went out at work at 3:45pm and I finally got the factory back up and running about 7:45pm. So, I only got about 15 minutes worth of work done. Hopefully I can get some more done soon.
