maybe you have never worked with fiberglass. i was basically saying make your tank out of it.

a buddy of mine and his dad would make lightweight fenders, hoods, trunklids and bumpers for their impalas

they would use the original part as a mold, and the fiberglass came in a kit. (boatmakers do the same thing)

but since you have a custom design, your mold would be custom.

i dont know what you are talking about with the stock tank? the stock tanks are made out of fiberglass with a resin interior. a steel tank will inevitably rust simply because of moisture in the air and moisture in the gasoline which cant really be prevented.

personally, if i were going to use a steel tank, i would use an aftermarket inline fuel pump and an aftermarket inline filter. the filter would be clear plastic housing so i could easily see if and when it was clogged and i would mount it under the hood.
it would go:
tank---filter---pump----engine
this way, the rust wouldnt mess up the pump or injectors, and i could catch when rust was starting to build up
id then try to find a way to make the sending unit for the gauge work.

 

The tank is steel, not fiberglass on a 3rd generation, or it sure seems to be. If it was fiberglass, I'd be so screwed with how dented up it is already. That's not a bad idea, but I'd rather not have to buy a new tank and new filter, and would rather use the stock assembly to cut down on cost.

i went out and looked at my mom's 3rd gen, there is a steel skid covering the fiber reinforced plastic tank. that is the skid that you have bashed up, mine is the same way. no manufacturer has put a steel gas tank in a vehicle for a number of years now.

i understand what you are saying about trying to keep down cost. im trying to peice together my SAS on the cheap.

 

I know the skid plate is bashed up and is made of steel, but my gas tank is also bashed up, and feels like the same material to me. Are you sure the tank isn't steel too? It looks and feels the same as the skid plate to me.

I plan to install one drain fitting, 2 vent fittings and the fill tube for a gravity fed system into the stock tank. It will operate similiar to the Auxilary Fuel Systems tank I used for +12 years on my '85 Nissan while exploring the deserts of Nevada years ago.

I plan to move the stock spare tire mount etc., make a new munt for this tank and make a skip plate for it.

40 gallons of fuel, I should be able to go a pretty good range with that.

To make things perfectly clear, the 3rd gen 4Runner tank is made out of steel. I have had mine out and pounded out the dents, also I have a 2001 tank sitting in my backyard.

Well, just a quick update on my gas tank project. Joe Darlington from Darlington Off-road is going to bring me the Isuzu gas tank on the 14th, so I'm hoping to have it installed and running by the 18th. It will be interesting to see how I can modify the wiring harnesses, tubing, and mounting brackets, so stay tuned for some good pics.
