Nice job man! looks great! lot-o good pics too! Maybe a tip for any others out there making rear inner fenders, pick up some trailer fenders. They work great but are a bit of a challenge to trim just right, but on the bright side a lot of the work is done for you....each truck is cut diff., but still worth looking at & measuring to see if they'll work.

now I need some new 37s...too cheap to go to 40s, for now! lol

I finally got my first run in on the 40's!! 4 other rigs and myself ran the Liberty trail in Independence. Here's a couple of pics







I didn't get a chance to trim the front fenders so I just took them off rather than rub the snot out of them. Truck ran great, no problems with the big tires!! I also must have trimmed enough in the front and rear, I didn't get the tires to rub once. That was also good news!

Bigger tires are fun. My 4Runner is pretty much point and shoot on trails like this. I will still have to pick my lines on the extremely tough trails but easy / moderate / difficult trails are drive over whatever and not really pick a line.

I do plan on building a full cage for it. I plan on putting my kids in the back seat so it will cover the area seats as well. I also need to build some tube bumpers and figure out how to carry a 36" Irok for a spare. I was originally thinking a swingout tire carrier but I don't know how I'd brace up a tube bumper enough in one corner to support a swingout with a tire on it.

My next idea was to build a platform for it above the cargo area in the rear. I would elevate it enough to stuff a cooler, tool box, and some camping gear under it or put it flat in the bed and build a rack over the top to hold all the stuff above the tire.

Nice rig!!! How long have you been on the 40's? Any breakage?

I'd like to lower mine an inch or 2 but my springs are way soft as is. If I pull a leaf, I'll be on the front bumpstops the entire time. I'll run it as is this year and make height adjustments next winter if need be.

yes and no, since going to the 40's Ive broken 1 set of rear gears, 1 set of front gears, front lockright and both inner hub gears, but the lockright and rear gears had about 3 years of hard abuse with 36's and 38's, the front gears had about 1.5 years on them, the hub gears were original.

so, i cant really say that the 40's were the cause of these failures because of all the previous fatigue, but they sure didn't help out any of the parts, also when i broke the front and rear gears (not at the same time) i was getting it pretty hard in double low 3rd on wet muddy rocks. i don't do that anymore well, try not to

 

Good to know!!! I still need to buy the Longfield hub gears and ARP hardware for the front axle. I should have gotten my R&P's cryo'd when I built them but wasn't thinking I'd be on 40's so soon

Quick question, what's your bottom of the frame to the ground height under the doors on your 4Runner? I'm trying to get an idea of how low others are sitting on 40's. Thanks!

Cool, thanks!!! What psi in the tires? I'm at 29" at 20psi so probably 28" at trail pressure. I'm going to work on lowering it after I put bumpers and a cage in it (which will probably lower it after adding that much weight )

It's not like I'm running a monster lift (TG 4" with 5" shackles) so maybe 5" of lift total.

 

5-6 psi w/ custom beadlocks
5" Extreme Lift w/ 1" body lift (all been on about 2.5 years)

 

Looks like you guy's had a fun trip! Your going to have to run Indy next
