I saw some like these on Spike TV, on "Trucks" maybe, a couple weeks ago and I had been meaning to make some anyway.

2x2x1/8 angle (8) pieces at 17" long
1.75" x 0.120 wall HREW tubing (8) pieces at 13" long
5x1.25 wheel casters with steel frames and hard rubber wheels, (16) @ 3.99 each at HF, they roll great on the concrete and the steel frame allowed me to weld them on easily and solidly

I got about $100 in them maybe.

Took me a couple hours to make (4) of these dollies

The base model, 1100 lb capacity per dolly, so I can move around 4400 lbs safely, easily anything I need to at the shop.



With the 12 ton jack stand (I got these for their height, not for the weight). I can use these to move around a frame, tube chassis, axle, whatver.



With a 39.5" Irok



A very worth while additional to any shop and a heckovalot cheaper than buying some dollies.

I am going to paint them tomorrow a nice flourescent orange so they don't "bite" me on the shop floor.

I've been meaning to build some for a while.

sometimes the simplest ideas are so cool...... i thought about picking up a set of the wheel dollies that harbor sells (i work on far more cars than trucks w/ large tires), but the ability to also hold the jack stand steady would be great. I may have to build some this weekend. Only thing i might change is to find some locking wheels for at least a couple of the dollies.

 

I priced out some dollies and the cheapest I found were like $350 but they wouldn't hold any bigger than a 33" tire, pointless for me at the shop.

I thought about "locking wheels" but not really a big deal. If I need it to be stationary I can just remove the dollies and leave on the big jack stands. Takes a couple minutes to swap out.

 

well like i said, i do a lot more cars, so i'm guessing the cheap harbor freight wheel dollies would hold my MR2 just fine lol. As far as the wheel locks, i'm thinking it would be nice to be able to store it in the garage against the wall. Our driveway here is too steep for me to push cars in and out by myself, so if the car is dead, it pretty much has to stay inside, but it would be nice to push it against the "storage" side and then lock it in place while i work on the other project. Thats the best thing about these though is that you can do them in just about any configuration you need.

 

Brian, with your dollies under each "corner", can you roll around any of your trucks with those? If so that would be awesome.

That's right, why I built them as I did, dual purpose. The jack stands fit in the dollies so I can roll Yotas around w/o tires/rims. I built them mainly to use with a soon to come future project so I can move it out, work on it when I can, roll it out of the way.

 

I actually used these today w/ the 12 ton jack stands to roll around the 85 project to clean shop. Worked like a charm. I'll get some pics tomorrow.

 

very nice i actually just bought a set of vehicles dollys for my austin healy for the winter to get it real close to the wall.. i bet i could add onto them and use jack stands for my trucks...

wow thoes would be really handy if in the middle or a suspension upgrade or SAS and you needed to move the vehicle to a different position, ill have to keep this idea in the back of my head
