Bumpers, sliders, armor

I have all of this stuff in my build thread, but figure a lot of members don't venture into the 84-85 section. So going to start a thread in here of the stuff I have fabbed for my 4runner in here

First thing I had to do after getting my 4runner was replacing the ugly rear bumper

So I tossed something together in Solidworks and bought the steel to get started.

Cut the main tube and mocked it up with jack stands to see how it was going to look. I was able to print out the cut lines using solidworks, this made cutting the angles much easier.

Welded caps on the main tube, this was done with my 110 welder.

I had my brackets cnc plasma cut locally, then welded them together.

Apparently I can't measure very well... Totally fubared the math on the mounting location holes and had to move them.

Welded tubes into the shackle mounts, and added the side bars.

Added some gussets in the corners, probably overkill. But they should help spread the load when I add my spare tire carrier.

And they help fill in the gap in the corners

Finished shot

Other then the 2 filler plates, all of the welding was done with a 220 welder. I also added side supports from the frame to the side bars, but never took a picture of those. Its taken several hard hits on the trail and hasn't moved at all.

Next up was sliders, decided to build them a week before hitting the trail

So once again I fired up solidworks and made some plans.

Didn't take to many fab pictures, so here they are half way done. One was tacked, other fully welded at this point.

And on the truck, mounted and painted

Also picked up a set of dented up doors for free, so the day before I was leaving to go wheeling I whipped up a set of half doors too

Lay out some tape

chop chop! Don't hold back

Then cut and bend some fresh sheet metal and weld'er in place

Then get out and wheel

Next up is the front bumper, starting with the solidworks drawing again. Not sure when I will start cutting and bending tube, I'll post up once I start on it

Very Nice Work!!! I'm impressed. Looking great and I can't wait to see how the front bumper turns out. I also love the color of your 4Runner. It's the first I've seen like that.

you should get em cut, then have a shop bend the cut in so its not a sharp edge, plus it looks clean.

Thanks

Fenders are trimmed all around now, back fenders were welded back up and all the rust holes filled. Fronts are cut, but not finished. I picked up certifit fenders for the front, but waiting to put them on till I know how I want to cut them and can paint them to match.

On my pickup, I rolled the edges of my fenders after cutting them using a pair of pliers, its not hard to do with basic tools.

I love the rear bumper. Looks sharp, man. I bet a similar look would fit nicely in front.

I think u should add some square tube to the front bumper or add a round tube to protect the rear quarters on the rear bumper. Just to tie all the shapes together. but thats just my 2 cents. They look real good though.

Thanks guys

Using the standard edition of solidworks, 2010 64 bit. If you have to buy software and want to do round tubing though, I would look at bend tech. Solidworks and tubing don't really go together. I have to call a lot of reference points just to create tubing along different planes.

I might add some plate to the bumper once its finished. And I have considered adding some rear tubing for corner protection in the back, but need to add the spare tire carrier first.

I finally got my stinger yesterday, might start on the front bumper this weekend. I might update the file before I start, or I'll just use the drawing as reference.

Nice work on the bumper and sliders.
For your front bumper you may want to look at mounting the side support tubes to the side of the winch mount then have the stinger tubes weld to them (and the winch mount). Look like you may be using a Trail Gear mount, or something very similar and there is only a mounting tab that sticks out to the side of them with zero room for tube.
Dont forget to reinforce the POS crossmember!

Awesome work man, do you have a thread in the actual Build-Up section yet?

I ordered the winch plate and stinger from Frontier 4x4, so my bumper will be similar to the ones he sells.

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showt...834&highlight=

I also ordered a frame brace kit from 4xinnovations, which will be welded to the frame.

As for frame tie in points, once the bumper is complete I will look at my options. I will not be adding a winch right away, that got pushed aside for now. I have some ideas, but waiting till the bumper is on the truck before I do anything.

Been keeping a build thread going in the 84/85 section. I personally never even noticed the build-up section until a month or two ago my self. I should just put a link to my build thread in my sig

Built my front bumper last night, of course I forgot to bring a camera with. Still need to trim the ends of the bumper and finish up a few of the welds, then paint

Went out and snapped a few pictures this morning, I'll post up some more pictures after its painted and back on the truck.
