Axle Swap, The Movie...

You might remember the webcam I ran when I did my axle swap. Since then, the 2,300 or so photos from the cam have been sitting here gathering dust, waiting on inspiration to strike. It finally did.

So, here's a ten minute video of the complete swap, from dismantling/cutting the IFS, to rolling it out for the final time. It's not exactly a tech or "how to" video because the quality is just not there, but I thought that some might enjoy watching an overview of the process.

All three of the videos are the same, just higher quality as you head down the list. You decide which one suits your bandwidth.

okay, at frame 723... Is that a 17mm wrench you have in your hand? I don't have one handy, can I just Dremel out a 16mm and call it good?

hahahhahah No worries, it's the "I have never been off road, but I NEED a solid axle," or "I need more power but only have $11." or "My dad won't let me lift the truck, can I do it without him noticing?" or "Can I use beer cans as a body lift?" questions that have me shaking my head I always have time to chat about real tech with someone who knows which end of the wrench to pound with

You can expect to pay anywhere from 200-250 to have the housing narrowed..

It's a Waggy axle, so there was no narrowing required. It's almost exactly a perfect fit for the Tacoma's, just a fraction of an inch wider than stock

It sort of fell into my lap. An Arizona TTORA member bought it, planning to put it in his rig. Then his employer moved him to Washington and he needed to sell the axle to make back some moving expenses. So I got a great deal on a non-vacuum operated, rust free axle. Since I was kind of tentatively planning to do the swap at that point, that pushed the decision over the edge and the kicked the project into high gear

Yeah, I imagine you get the same kind of mails. Most of the time I enjoy the correspondence, since any excuse to chat about trucks/wheeling is a good excuse. It's an honor to get to help people make important decisions about something as important as their rides. But I never know how to respond to the "I have never welded before, but I want to bob my bed, can I use duct tape?" kind of mails :pat:
