82 longbed bed bob

Ok, so after much thought i decided to pull my flatbed off and put on my stock bed and bob it. I have the bed on a toyota frame that a friend was making into a trailer. i got the whole thing from him and brought it home to start the bob. i will be also fixing the trailer and putting my flatbed back on it at a later day.

i started the bob today on the bed and decided to cut 16 inches from the bed. so here is my progress so far. excuse the pics if some are blurry my camera died so i had to use my phone and it was only about 25 degrees out.

my truck it's going on.

the first cuts.

the back cut off.

going back together

the 16 inches that came out.

if wanna make some extra cash, i'll take that section, you can even cut the sides off and cut the floor into sections to ship? i sure could use some nice patch panels.

Nice touch using the 1" square tube to help maintain the proper width.
Some thing that I think people forget about and end up with a tailgate that doesn't quite fit correctly

having it on the trailer frame probably made life easier

very nice job

thanks, i just used a scrap piece i had. as for the tailgate.. the guy that had my bed on the trailer took it off along with the taillight lens. so now i have to find new ones. i might just get a net gate for now.

thanks, but i'm just not into the long beds myself. this will be about the same length as the flatbed.

ok, well it don't look like i made much progress today, but i spent most of the day welding and i don't want to warp the sides so i was welding slow and skipping around. the floor was what took me most of the day where the ridges were higher on the inside so i had to hammer down each one while i was welding. still not done yet, but it's getting closer. probably won't get much done till friday. dark when i get home from work.

got the back mostly welded. i'll hide the weld with bedliner inside so i don't have to grind as much.

got the side hook back on, still have to do the other side.

another side pic. got my square tube brace off too.

it did warm up today to around 26 degrees.

6.0's get BAD gas mileage, the company trucks on the pipeline are all brand new chevy's with 6.0's and none of them get over 12mpg.

thanks. i like the look of the longbeds bobbed too. mine is a 6.0L i love it for the power, but not so much for the mpg. mine gets around 13 or 14 on the highway.

ya i think its probably good, but i put around 100k on it in the last 2 years. so i would like a little better mpg. the price of fuel is high enough that it kills my pocket book. still get better than my yota tho.

thanks. hope to work on it more this weekend if that white stuff quits falling from the sky. it's outside and i don't have room to move it in to work on it. did spay some primer on the bare metal just to help keep rust off till i get to it again.

ok it's been a while, but i was finally able to work on my truck today. got some more work done and the bed is now sitting on the truck. did a quick spray paint job so the color all matched. will get a flat tan nicer paint job maybe this summer and finish the bodywork.

the bed back on. 16 inches shorter.

need to get my mudflaps on now.

you should make a coffee table out of the 16" of bed you cut out! box it in with some diamond plate on the side! haha
