I wish it took me 15 days... Think it was a 2+ month project working a few hours each weekend. I diddnt start the thread until I knew for sure I could finish it.

Ok, thought I would post 2 more shameless pics of the bumper. Took it to big bear this past weekend. Used it once to pull someone out and a few weeks prior before it was 100% done a monster SAS taco pulled me out with it.

So all in all its soild and I am happy. I put the weatherstripping on to fill the gaps and wheeled it with the spare.




So am I crazy? but I am considering the idea of adding a swingout for a spare tire and jerry can...

good Q - i've talked to a lot of folks about this - some people have serious vibration problems w/ the swingout - that's why i opt'd to not have one on my bumper. That being said - i think it can be done , peeps have done it.\- just not sure if you'll have the clearance away from the truck? i know they way mine was built (like yers, bruce t/s style) there was no room.

Just an update, figured I would keep my progress in this thread. I spent the last few months thinking about how I could get a tire carrier built for this bumper and 3 weeks ago I began building. One weekend of adding additinal support to the bumper mounts, frame and adding a lot of behind the scense support to the bumper. This is what I came up with. So far it works well, its based off the Shrockworks Xterra bumper.

(FYI, the wiring is not done yet)

The hinge:
(1) 1" Grade 8 bolt
(2) 1.5" (1" id) Bronze super oil-lite bushings
(1) 1.75 od, .250 wall DOM sleeve
(1) Zerk fitting

Material:
2.5 x 1.5 .120 wall rectangle stock
1.5 x 1.5 .120 wall square stock
Tire plate from AtoZ Fabrication
Bling Gussest from BTF.
60lb Gas shock
5/8 Safety pin (22,000lbs double shear strength)
2000lb Toggle clamp
2nd gen OEM license plate holder (thanks bamachem for the info)
Slee Hi-lift mounts (re-used from my roof mount)
4 Cans of spray on bed liner

I'm currently finishing up the final jigs and have another prototype bumper built for another board member. By the end of the week I should have 3 more ready.....

Did you add any bracing inside the bumper behind the mounting points of the carrier? I'd also add a diagonal support off the horizontal piece the tire is mounted to.

 

let us know how that spare tire does at about 70 mph....

FWIW, i've had zero issues with my tire being under the truck....never caused a problem wheeling - BUT....the swing-a-way is MUCH cooler looking!

I hit my spare a few times while wheeling. My main motivation was to get the hi-lift off the roof and get the water/gas outside the truck. Plus swing outs are just cool :-)

I did a 5 min quick trip down the freeway to the WEROCK event yesterday, at 75mph, no problems or noise.

I'm not 100% happy with the jerry can holder, its a little to bulky for what I like so that might get chopped off this summer. For now it will do.

Only other thing I would like to do is get an allow rim back there, partly for cosmetic purposes and partly for weight savings.

 

oh, i hit my spare alright....i just let it be a slider! It gets drug around plenty fine!
