1985 Waggy 44 - If money were no object, how would you build it?
#41
I would have gotten the Front Range Axle but it is set up for spring over and Brian said it would was not setup for spring under. Caster would be off.
I talked to him on the phone a long time about it. I like the spring under I have with the Dana 44, my truck is taller than most lifted 3rd Gens by an inch or two but no where near what a spring over swap would have gave me. I have kids and stuff to load and it is a perfect setup for me.
For practical use in real life, I had to stay low. I really like it.

This is the attitude that i have. Trail fixes are the most annoying, most frustrating, and most time consuming of all things in this sport.
If money was no object, than overkill wouldn't be enough, i'd go for UNkillable, assuming that was possible.
On a side note, if you don't want to break axles, you could always go to 28 inch tires run by a 22re, and you won't have enough torque to break them.

Chris Joe Darling is running stock w/ 5.38 gears and an ARB w/ 35's. He's broke one shaft but it was the original 25 yr old 297 joint. I'm running 297s w/ 38 TSL's and haven't broken yet in almost a year. If money were no issue though I'd just sell you my 87 waggy 44 w/ 4.88s and chevy flattops and build my D60
Only thing though w/ a dana toy combo is the closest match is 5.13 dana 5.29 toy. Since I want wider and bigger and the gears won't match like I want it means I have to now build my rear 60 as well

Thats the one I'm talking about. The 25/30 yr old 297 or whatever came stock in his waggy axle. Not only did it mangle the shaft it tool out his driver side knuckle also. Not bad considering he only replaced what was needed to get his truck going as he was hurrying to get it done for an event

The Ultimate D44 would be HP to start with, ARB has a 40 spline locker and you add D60 Knuckles, 40 spline d60 inners and outers, warn fusable hubs and you have clearence, low weight and strength.
I have a set of full size axles from a 78 ford, D44 hp and 9" rear with limited slip that are going under my '69 bronco sitting in the yard. I plan on running 40"+ swampers so I am gonna use an Ox locker with moser or warn shafts and CTM joints.
If you are worried about breakage then bring spare shafts, joints, hubs and a yoke.
