My first repair question.

Some of you seemed familiar with the leaking rear axle. So, I ask, should I plan on doing the bearings and seals all at once? Or should I just be doing the seals? Or is there more that I should do in addition to the bearings and seals.

I have a friend who works for a Lexus dealer and can get me a discount on Toyota parts. Rear axle bearings and seals are $210 + tax. Does this sound about right? To hight to low?

Thanks for the advice...I will be requesting MUCH MUCH more, so don't burn yourself out.

To replace the seals you'll obviously have the axles all the way out. If you have the funds, it makes sense to replace the bearings at that point, in my opinion.

Although, in my opinion, it makes sense to swap to disc brakes at that point as well... so my opinion may be a bit askew. Plus my 4Runner is older, and ready to be modded to the hilt.

I think I got bearings from Toyota for $45 each, but that was a year or so ago... and from memory. I'd also look into the seals Marlin is now offering. I got a pair for my front axle recently and they seem well designed. I assume they have seals for a 3rd Gen axle as well.

Hopefully some of the locals can recommend a shop to press your new bearings on. I can't recall who did mine. I think some random automotive machine shop out of the Yellow Pages.

How many miles on your 4Runner? It is covered under warranty up to 60K if you should by chance be under that.

Otherwise...it is a pretty in depth job but not that bad.

Shot I wish we were under 60K. JGM is right, a tad over 140K. I am going to be out of town in a week on a much needed vacation. Once I get back I will start rounding up the parts and I will get some shop time scheduled with my buddy and we will get it done.

I will have more questions then I am sure. Thanks!
