Im trying to find a few people from the pueblo colorado springs area for trailing and working on rigs. anyone out there

there some Co. people on here, they will chime in, ive met a few of them, super cool people, hook up with Darren, he knows them trails like he made them himself, good luck and have fun.

Just another Coloradan checking in. I would suggest you try to
attend the CO4RJ this year. It will only be about 115 miles from Pueblo.
You will meet a lot of folks there. I was able to attend 2 days last year
and met a few but not all of the people there.

BTW, I lived in Pueblo West in the '80's.

Hey, i live in Pueblo and just stumbled across this thread. Send me a message if you want to go wheeling. I know most of the good spots around southern colorado

 

I'm in Pueblo West and know some of the local trails but I'm interested in finding some that I can run in the winter. I'm not quite up for Penrose yet but I'd like to find some others that aren't buried in snow from October through March.

Aaron Elson and I (and a few others) met at the 2004 CO4RJ and have been making plans for when the snow melts. Aaron usually does a write up on www.colorado4x4.org of our trail runs - check there.

I'm coming out to Penrose in mid April of 07' for a wedding. I'm trying to get the bride's brothers to go for a scenic wheeling trip while I'm there but I’ve never met them. I'm worried about the amount of snow in the mtns for I’m looking for trails with a view. I’ve looked at all of Darren’s trail pictures several times and have spent way too much time at Colorado4x4.org for someone who has never been to Colorado.
I use the 4runner to get me to places that would be too far to hike and/or too high to reach in a day. Wheeling to wheel is fun but I don’t have much time there so I what to see as much as I can.
It’s going to be a 20+ hr drive and I need to attend the wedding so scheduling could be tight.
Does anyone know anything close to Penrose? Right now I’m planning on seeing the Royal Gorge and driving up Pikes Peak. I would love to do the Telluride, San Juan area or even the Schofield Pass area but I’m think it will be too early in the spring for all of those trails.

 

Yup, there is a very nice group of trails right outside of Penrose (Independence). I wouldn't exactly call them "scenic" though They rate a solid 10 (or even 11) on Colorado's 1-10 difficulty scale.

yeah, I was looking at some Independence pictures and thought that it looked difficult to hike that trail.

I was thinking more like Hermit pass and Hayden pass, if they're not covered in snow.

You are correct about that being too early for the areas you mention. Unfortunately, all of the scenic high roads don't start opening until mid-June. You can always find a local group to go on a snow run that time of year, but none of those areas are what I would consider scenic. They probably would be compared to downtown Cincinnati, but not in relation to some of the other places you had in mind. You're on the right track of thinking along the likes of Pikes and Royal Gorge. There are plenty other great views along some of our highways, but you'll always be looking up to the peaks instead of across them like on high passes.

Hopefully, you'll be able to schedule another trip out here at some time during one of the better times of year for sightseeing. The two best times are around the first of July when the high roads have recently opened and there is a huge amount of snow on the peaks, and then late July when the wildflowers are out, though with minimal snowpack.
