E-Locker setup kit
I've had a rush on E-locker builds and repairs, in house and sourcing for other shops. The fustrations I've had dispelling rumors and e-locker myths as well as supply problems has motivated me to create the ultimate E-locker setup kit and pass along some useful wisdom. First the tacoma e-locker is a selectable electric 8" v6 differential. Same spline count and basic design of the pickup v6 or turbo rear diff, it shares the same pinion bearings, ring and pinion size and spider gears. The pinion splines are larger on the e-loc than the old v6 gears. So to make this thread short you can use any v6 pickup gears in a e-loc with the use of a conversion flange with the pickup 8" seal. So all the pickup gear ratio's are available 4.10-5.71 but also the 8" tacoma ratios that are only available from the dealer like the new 3.73 and old 4.30's. So with this kit you can regear, rebuild and reseal any taco e-loc to fit your needs,no more trips back to the part store to find the right seal for your application because both are included. I'm not trying to make a sales pitch reply with your thoughts or frustrations I needed to just to be informative.
Here is the kit it will retail for $300 shipped.
This is a bad picture of the two pinions both out of Tacoma E-Lockers. The left is a pickup v6 pinion and the right is a factory e-loc pinion. Their respective flanges are next to them. Hard to see but the e-loc pinion and flange have larger splines
Hope this helps with choices surrounding factory Taco E-lockers

Just curious, would there be any difference between a V6 trd e-lock rear axle and a 2.7 4 cyl. trd e-lock rear axle??? Both out of a 2001 taco 4x4?? Anybody....Size, gearing, spline count, etc.....

I asked a question in the wrong place earlier today. I keep forgetting about this handy search feature.
So what do you do if you wanna run a e-locker up front. Or should I say would you wanna run one up front. I have a 95 stock ifs 4runner but was interested in doing dual e-lockers rather than dual ARBs?
any advice is helpful I am just researching now.

All 4runners from 96-04 have either an Elocker or a standard V6 3rd. The 8.4 is not available in 4runners. Only Tacomas and T100s had the 8.4
You should add a solid pinion spacer into that kit.

Lt.,
Sas means "solid axle swap". If you swap your ifs (independent front suspension) with a solid "one-piece" axle like you have on the rear of your truck, then you could install a Toyota e-locker in that. Very expensive, but inarguably the best way to go since solid axles are much stronger and can take way more abuse than an ifs.
I personally would just go with an ARB locker in your stock ifs. Still works very well and would cost several hundred $$ (if not thousands) less.

I'm going for the ARB locker front and rear. Sound better and the cost is friendlier. Thank you for your help.

Cool thanks much. Am I able to get the parts that I need from you or do I have to go somewhere else? I searched for the gear ratio for the IFS dif. A Toyota dealer said the front dif is 3.73 and the rear is 8.4 like you said, is there any other parts I need for a ARB locker front and rear?

You will need the air compressor for the ARB lockers. Whatever the ratio is in your front diff, it is the same as your rear diff. It will not work unless they match. 3.73 is a gear ratio, The 8.4 is the size in inches of your rear diff. If you do in fact have a 3.73:1 ratio, I would suggest re-gearing the diffs when you install the lockers unless you are running 29" tires. You can choose the ratio you want when you buy the gears. A suggestion:
30" tires - 3.73 or 4.10
31" - 4.10 or 4.30
32" - 4.56
33" - 4.88....you see the pattern.

okay, so my daily driver is a '95 V6 toyota ext cab pickup, and i just picked up an e locker 3rd for it. the guy told me that it was out of a 2002 tacoma and is 3.73 R&P. i didnt ask if it was trd or not, or stick or auto.
1st ?,
whats the easiest way to determine if its an 8" or 8.4"? true that all e lockers are 8"?
2nd ?
can i use the R&P from my stock 3rd to install them into the e locker 3rd to match the front R&P?
from what im reading its looking like a "yes" as long its the 8", and not the 8.4".
thanks guys!

Also im not sure if you plan on makeing your own harness for them, if not inchworm, and 12 volt guy both make e-locker harness that work great.

sweet! thanks for the info man.
everything im reading is saying the same.
one more question is,
i read that the pinion splines are bigger on the e locker, so does that just mean that i need to use the pinion flange from my old 3rd? or do i need a conversion flange like mentioned before?

yea if you re-gear you will need a different pinion flange do to the fact that the splines are different from an e-locker pinion and a basic v6 or turbo 4cyl pinion. I also noticed o some of the later model tacomas and 4runner e-locker 3rd's, the flange wont bolt up to an 84-95 drive shaft, but the older models will. Wierd
