Obviously this is a little off, or Toyota would not have put 4.88s in a 4x4 with 31s.

Toyota Put 4.88's with 31's on a auto, because the first gear ratio in the auto is alot higher than the one in the 5 speed. With a 5 speed 4.56 is the correct gear ratio for 31's.

For close to stock gearing

For a 5 speed....

4.56 31"
4.88 33"
5.29 35" +

For an Auto

4.88 31"
5.29 33" +

I think the tourque converter makes up for a lot of that. I figure it will pretty much be totally liveable, I hope.

Great thread...

I am wrestling with the same questions. I am looking for some 33's to go on my stock rims which should be fine with no fouling if I use a small spacer.

With OME in back and BJ spacers in front, clearance should be fine.

I have a 5 speed with factory 31's so should be at 4.56 (any sure fire way to check without counting revs as 4.56 to 4.88 is gonna be tough to be accurate with ? )

If I switched to 4.88's I would be running 210 more rpm at 70 mph on the highway which is fine with the 33's and if I use the 31's for most DD chores , switchign to the 33's for trail days, it should be pretty zippy ( a relative term) around town.

Hmmmmm ...its just money.

I have 33x1250s and recently went from 4.10s to 5.29s with a 3.0/AT and absolutely love it. The majority of my driving is 45mph or less city driving. Hills are much, much easier and highway acceleration and passing is now bearable. Before I could barely hold 70mph in drive with a wind

I think 4.88s would be OK but since you do have an automatic, I'd for sure consider the 5.29s.

David - check your codes in the door jamb. If it's G254, then you have 4.56, which is what mine is.

How does all this discussion differ if we're talking a MT with 4.56 instead of auto with 4.88? Anyone know the actual ratios by gear in the transmission? I would love to drop some RPM's in fifth, and seems like first is plenty low...

Looks like 33x10.50s for now. If they don't work I will sell them or trade for some 32x11.50s.

A year or so down the road I will have enough saved for 5.29/ARB Locker/33x12.50s.

After I posted that, I went to Roger's site (of course ) and found the code breaker thingy.

Sure enough, G254 so from my new found knowledge, 8" gear, 4.556: 1 and 4 pinion.

Is that a technical term?
