What are the pro's & con's to ditching the sway's?
#1
So I want to know if I were to ditch both the front and rear sway bars would I basically have all of the possible flex an IFS rig can have? Also would it flex out so much I could start breaking things? Could the coils pop out? Then when it comes down to handling of the rig. Obviously if I take the sways out cornering will be touchier right? I have not seen many if any posts or threads on this. Any info for me? Anyone running this set up? Ben

It will corner like a sky scraper... I should know... I broke a few links and just decided to take it off... good for scaring people, and making hung over people sicker, other than that... you'll want to keep them on

I've been running with no front sway bar for about 6 months now. All in all, it's not too bad. Just slow down a bit more in the corners. The one thing I did notice is that in the winter, with all the sand/cinders NY puts on the roads, it's much easier to spin the inside rear wheel coming out of a turn. With the front sway bar gone, the body dives more in the front, thus taking some of the weight off the inside rear tire, making it pretty easy to spin.

Jackson- aren't you running 882's? If so, there's no comparison to Yoter's torsion bars. I'll bet that if he disconnects the sways w/ as much lift as he has that he'll be VERY tipsy. Yoter, you need to get disconnects on the front and don't worry about the rear...

I'm running 881s. And I didn't mean to imply that my experiences will be typical. Obviously different rigs with different suspensions and different lifts will behave differently. Also, driving characteristics will have a lot to do with how the rig performs.
Yoter's rig is significantly different than mine (different generations, different heights, etc), so I hope he/she would be smart enough to realize that, and know that my experience could be completely different from someone elses.
People need to realize that forums like this offer very little fact. Forums are a place to share experiences to help other make decisions.

It's early. I haven't had my caffine yet.

Bottom line - Yoter: IMO, the taller your rig is, the more you'll feel the lack of sway bars. I've got abotu 5" of lift under mine and OME gear at all 4 corners. I DEFINITELY notice a difference with the front disconnected, but with a bit of caution in the corners, it's not a big deal for me.

I've got Tundra TRD up front and Downey rears and I also notice the swaybar disconnected. It's still street drivable, but very tipsy in moderate turns. For me, the swaybar is a MUST, and I only have 3" of overall lift.

I've had no front sway bars for well over a year now and I wouldn't put them back on. I also don't have any lift, it'd probably be quite a bit different for you. I've never disconnected the rear.

Had front and/or back off for a while while installing my lift. It was noticably squirly on the road, needed to take it easy. I put mine back as soon as i could, noticably better. I assume with your additional body lift it would be worse.
I usually remove them for off road (sometimes front only, sometimes both). Better articulation and seems like a better ride. Working on QD's.
It's easy to try just remove the links and see how you like it.
I did pop a front CV out of the tulip with them off once. Might not have happened with the front on, but there was another problem that caused it.

i've had my rear swaybar removed since November and not noticed much difference....of course since i've lifted the rig higher and higher I drive it less and less like a race car!
Fronts - big time noticable!

Dude, get the disconects. My budy disconected his and swerved on the road doing about 20mph and got his up onto two wheels!! Almost rolled it!! It's insanely dangerous for road driving or driving at speed, especially with as much lift as you have. You don't want to have to drive like an 80 year old lady around town do you? Seriously.

its not like you're going to die if you take them off, just don't drive like you have a racecar. yes your flex will improve (alot in the rear) just do it, if you like it keep them off if not put them on...i have a little brother who is 16 that drives a lifted jeep cherokee with out swaybars and doesn't bitch (drives on highway and in town), and believe me, cherokee w/out swaybars is way worse than a runner w/out sways.

I don't have a swaybar. But I have a long travel kit with the sway away torsions. These bars are so stiff, they will control any body sway with your sway bars off. They would allow you to more comfortably ride without the sway bar, but with stock arms it may actually limit your travel due to the increase spring rate. But they call em sway-aways for a reason.

I've been running without the front swaybar for over a year. I had discos, they were junk and broke. It's a little tippier than with them, but not bad. But, I drive it like a truck, not a sports car.
