Question What kind of suspension lift/ rear locker should I get?

I drive an 89 toyota pickup truck with a 2.4 22r 4-speed manual that is 2-wheel-drive. I am only looking for about 3 inchs. I have 27/8.5/r14 BFG all-terrians on it right now and they rub, so if I lift it that will solve the problem. Also is there any way I can replace the gears in my rearend to make it a locker and if so then where can I get them? I don't want buy a new axle all I want are the gears to replace the ones I have. Tell me what I should look into that will not break my bank account.

ok, search! There's many lockers out there for many diff prices i.e Aussie ~200 Detroit~600 E locker ~8-900 (used) ARB ~1,200 I don't know what they have for a 2wd truck though...go to torque masters website and see if theres an aussie for yours, if not then go to powertrax and look for a lock right, if not look for a detroit ez locker then lastly look for the more expensive ones if thats what you want. The elcoker and arb are selectable while the rest are auto lockers

You're gear ratio has nothing to do with a rear locker. And I would suggest using the search button and tell us what you find.

There are ball joint spacers available for the 84-95 2wds. Check out www.4crawler.com

I'm reading this thread and feeling sorry for this guy. New person comes to this board looking for help, and to be blunt, you guys are kinda being dicks. He has a 2wd, which is not talked about a lot for lifts. He might want a locker, which for a 2wd is possibly a 7.5" rear application, not talked about much. He has rubbing issues with 27" tires, probably not a lot here for tires that small. Even if he finds some hits with searching, it most likely won't have much to do with his specific application. And posting a bunch of links to aftermarket parts sites doesn't help for crap if it's someone that doesn't know much about cars. That list, expanded to include every vendor folks can think of, as a sticky, that would be helpful.
Also, there were 5 post so far on this thread that did nothing to help (some could argue mine makes 6) but told this guy to search for stuff he probably won't find or understand. This board is big enough now that searching brings up a lot of useless junk, and for someone without a good understanding of their vehicle it would be frustrating. For a good example go over to Pirate and try to search for anything. I just hope this board can continue to be friendly to new folks, and helpful to everyone, so far this thread is not showing that. I'm done ranting now.
As far as help, for lift to clear bigger tires, the easy way is add-a-leafs to your existing springs or new lift springs for the back. If you go to a site like www.truckperformance.com you can do a search that is specific to your vehicle to see some of the optios for springs and lifts. Gears and lockers work hand in hand but are not the same thing. Most times you can get a locker and use your existing gears. If you have a repair manual for your truck you can many times figure out the gear size and ratio by looking at the VIN and checking a chart in the manual. If you go up in tire size you may want to change gear ratios to compensate, if you add a locker that would be the time to swap gears too. Hopefully more folks will chime in with additional info, and not with requests for you to try out the nifty search feature. And please don't post something negative about me and my attitude, this guy probably already has a bad image of this site. If you want to rag on me send a PM.

Um, I thought I was giving him exactly what he asked for. He coudln't find any lifts. SO I gave him every site I could think of with quality 2wd lifts. If he has further specific questions, I feel that we can help him. But at this point, his eyes just needed to be opened to what was out there, so he can do a little investigative exploring for himself. Just pointing him in the right direction.

I've actually never purchased anything from them, but they seem to have good information on their site and they are helpful if you call. If I were to buy things on-line I would probably give them a try. There are a bunch of other web sites that offer parts, but not much information as to applications. I suggested them because you can search for things specific to your vehicle, and they seem to have a reasonable selection. Something else I would suggest is to get a Downey catalog. It costs a couple bucks, and is completely biased towards their products, but has some decent information and a bunch of parts for 2wd. Deathrunner posted a link to their site, you may be able to order the catalog on-line or just give them a call.

csa,

tell me, how did anyone give you grief? no one is busting your balls and i think you need to thank deathrunner and elripster for pointing you in the right direction, not admonishing them. part of the process of figuring out what is the best combination for you is doing your own research and weighing the pros and cons of every company's products. unless your expectation was that someone was going to provide you some kind of list with part numbers and you blindly following that list? i hope not because each company's products behave differently and may not fit your intended use. so understand that no one was giving you a hard time. hopefully you will spend some time to narrow down your choices and come back with some good questions. then you will get better input and value out of the forum's collective knowledge than your original, broad questions.

and greg,

you can call us "dicks", but i find it extremely ironic and hypocritical that on the one hand, you criticize (for example) deathrunner for proving links, but on the other, you provided one of the same companies (downey) that he did. your suggestions only mirror what others have said: "here are some companies you should look at...check them out and let us konw how it goes".

Call it what you will.
Yes, I mentioned Downey, I also said their website is lousy, and mentioned it only as a way of getting contact info for a catalog. I explained why, that is the difference.
I do not think everyone posting here is a "dick", each person can look back at their contribution to this new members knowledge and form their own opinion.

As I posted earlier, your response directed at me did not help the original poster or anyone else, and could have been better expressed in a PM. Just my opinion.

The difference between here and pirate is while i told him to search i also gave him some info...But honestly is it really that hard to go on google and search for lockers? That's what I did and came up with that list in about 2 minutes

I didn't mean my comments to be taken by any one person, but if someone were to go back and reread the first part of this thread as a whole it didn't look all that pretty, and I guess I wasn't too far off from what the original poster said in his response. If I wanted to play devils advocate I could say that some people might not know about Google and it would be hard for them to come up with those results. My computer illiterate father would be a perfect example.
I made my comments hoping they would be taken as a request for folks to look twice at what they type before they post, and do what you can to make the Yotatech "community" a better place for everyone, including new people. Instead of cluttering up this thread I would be more than happy to discuss this in an off-topic post, or through PM's.
As far as the topic of this thread, I hope I helped at least a little and am more than happy to try to answer other questions or give further advice.

I had a lift on my '89 2WD that would clear 31's with only VERY minor rubbing. It was by Fabtech (www.fabtechmotorsports.com), and the quality and design were AWESOME. The ride was better than stock.

Unforunately, they don't make that particular lift anymore It would seriously be worth a call to them though and see if they could make you one - it was called the Ivan-Dan, and was supposedly what Ivan Stewart used on his baja trucks! (I think the lower control arms weighed 50 lbs a piece - seriously beefy!)

Rear is easy - Add a leafs (preferred) or blocks.
