Ok so a couple hours no problem?

I do not need to pull the rack right? someone said I did in another post or thread

I build cars - some pretty serious stuff from the ground up so I am pretty competent

Not that I am Arnold but I am a pretty big dude - 6/2 235 and in good shape, I enjoy keesh, red wine, moonlit walks on the beach, snuggling in front of the fire in winter and chess...oh wait this is a yotatech post, damn I did it again,,,,anyway I will have a friend help me swap the diff, who also builds cars pretty heavily

so in an ideal world, a couple hours? if no problems?

please advise and thanks for your posts!!!!!

That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard about this task. If someone actually removed their steering rack to swap their diff they should not be working on vehicles...I hope they checked their tail light oil and greased their muffler bearings while they were at it.

NO, YOU DO NOT TOUCH THE STEERING RACK

Plan for a full day.

Why? Because no matter what something is gonna go wrong.

k so im doing this swap tomorrow. i've got a front tacoma diff regeard and arb'd going in and had some quick questions...

what size is the filler/drain plugs? 12mm hex?

and there shouldnt be any difference in the taco front diff and my current setup correct? i was comparing pics in my haynes & chilton manuals, and they had 2 different diagrams for taco's n runners. the only difference i saw was the connections for the ADD and 2/4 selectors. the diff i've got has the ADD tube already attached.

Manual Hubs take a little longer.

That's why I haven't switched to manual hubs yet, even though I have everything to do the swap....

Yea, breaking axles is the norm, but try breaking the jack shaft, now that's a PITA......

Just swapped my IFS differential Friday. Using air tools and a few hand tools.

Most time consuming deal was with the rear diff. mount. Both loosening the bolts, and getting the bolts back in.

Loosen them with the diff sitting on the crossmember, tighten them the same way sitting on the member.

About 3.5 hrs, plus having to roll out from under the rig to answer the damn phone 3 times.

Just did this yesterday. It took 1.75 hours for me w/ air. I'll admit to cheating though. I had knocked out the studs on the new diff prior, and I cut the old studs while they were on the truck and replaced them with 1.5" grade 8 bolts and lock nuts...

well the swap went pretty straight forward...just alot of grunt work using hand tools. i did have to send a friend out to grab me that damn 12mm hex for the rear diff bolt...so if you dont have that..get it! took me pretty much most of the day doing the work by myself. that included removing bumper, adding new PS pump + cooler, and of course diff swap + arb compressor install.
