? Should I go A/T or M/T tires ?

Hey guys... After the 2" BL, my 265/75/16's Revo A/T standard load rating, looks very small and I want to upgrade to 33" tires with at least a D rating... I am stuck between either 285/75/16 Wrangler MT/R's, Firestone Destination MT's, or 295/75/16 Nitto Terra Grappler AT's.

The MT/R's will run $718, Destination MT about $716, and the Terra Grappler's about $600 from tires.com.

I do about 95% onroad and 5% offroad... When I do go offroad, I will only be doing easy to easy-moderate trails, no rock climbing or anything too extreme however there will be rock beds that I will pass. This will probably be once a month or every two months or so. Usually during the winter I go snowboarding so snow traction should be good. Wet traction would be great too. I also sometimes go on long road trips, probably 300-500 miles round trip.

I am still on my stock gearing and don't plan to regear... I don't mind it being slow.

What do you guys think?

I wanted the 305/70/16 Grapplers but the sucker is an E rating...

MTs seem a little much for only 5% off road duties and MT's road manners might get tiresome after a while not to mention wear and handling but I'd think an AT Terr Grappler might be a better choice over an MT.

I personally will have a set of the Nittos on my DD (which sees about the same off roading you do and I also don't do the extreme stuff) by the end of the week.

Let me know how you like them. I really want the 305 ones but I don't think I will like the E rating at all.

I've got the Destination MTs (33/12.5-15). Traction in all conditions is GREAT! I've run them pretty soft (25psi) for a smoother ride, and it's cost me tread life - I expect to only get about 20-25k miles out of these tires. If run at 30-35psi, I would think the tread life would be a little better, but...

Don't forget to check out the Toyo Open Country A/T's. I ran the 37's on my team's Humvee for a desert race and they were very well mannered on the Freeway (Humvee can only go 65 though) and worked smoothly in hard desert terrain. They have up to a E load rating and they seemed to be as tough as anything out there (well except for BFG Baja's of course).

I run the Destinations (33x12.50's) at full pressure... litttle noisy but as Jackson hinted the treadlife is better... I've got 23k on mine (regular rotation while rotating in a spare) and expect another 15 to 20k more out of them.... Traction is awesome in all conditions I've come across, except for clay... I can spin them fast enough to clean them out, but they still get me where I wanna go and back, so no complaints whatsoever!

Uhhh... I'd say get AT's, it doesn't sound like you'll need the noise or the tread of the MT's, and a good set of AT's will go pretty well over ALOT of terain... Why the concern over the E load rating, that's about as good as it gets, it's what's on my work truck for contracting and they haul LAOT of weight. Or is that the problem?

Cheers

Dave

I have been eyeing the 295/75/16 Nitto Terra Grappler.
You don't need an M/T or MT/R, unless you want the look and can live with the downsides

as you said you drive mainly on-road, go with the nitto. A friend has 25's on an excursion and has had some good treadlife, and they still look semi aggressive...

Go with AT's. Mt's will just get harder and harder to keep round and running smooth (with exceptions). Plus, the AT's will *probably* last longer and provide a smoother ride.

For what its worth, I am running Yokohama AT's and they have yet to let me down on the rocks, in the mud, or highway traffic.

thanks for all the input guys... I will probably be going with the Grapplers.

About the load rating... Would an E rating be super harsh? I don't tow anything, don't have anything to tow.

See, I can't really comment cause I've never run E's on a small SUV, they've always been on Fullsize DOdge's. With the Diesel and all those tools, they could have been very stiff but I wouldn't feel it cause of the load. so I can't really say, but I'd kind of think now that maybe they would be.

The E load rating should be fine, just don't inflate them all the way. Case in point, BFG Rugged Trails have an E load rating and my friend's F-350 (yes I know) is running them at 85psi. My other friend has the same tires, on a tacoma and runs them at 35psi. Either way, it feels about the same on the two trucks.

those do look a little silly. for your situation, an a/t is the best choice, in my opinion. as for the brand, glad to see it didnt take you too long to decide...because i think some people spend forever deciding on one; i personally believe you cant really go wrong with any of the ones that come up when tires are discussed on yotatech.

you do you know youll have to post pictures once theyre on?

its a yotatech rule.

Either the front of the front flare (mine hit when I had the stock bumper on) or the back of the front flare. I will post picks of how I trimmed mine tomorrow.
