Do the triangular design to take advantage of the travel.

You need to measure at full stuff and full droop on YOUR rig and then check the manufacturers' charts for compressed/extended length.

I will never buy shocks straight from the application guide ever again.

hey man i dont know what size tires your running or if you have a block under the leafs but i am running the 63's with a three inch block and 14" 5150's. i have plenty of room to drop to a 1-2" block and still not bottom out. here are some pics.

Looks like you got the stiffer ones, rear doesn't look to flex very well at all (see how the axle is parallel to the body, all the flex is in the front suspension).

You could take a leaf out, and it would help.

Shocks work better vertical (truck will be more stable and whatnot). Figure out what you're going to do with the shock mounts and flex the truck out to find what you have for travel and buy accordingly.

I have a 2nd Gen 4runner with 63" chevys out of a 3/4 ton 4x4 4 leaf + overload. If you have a 4runner do not mount the shocks like / \ it will be very very unstable at hwy speeds. I almost lost it in mine on Sunday going around a easy left at about 100kms/hr with the shocks mounted like / \ you get very little absorbing of side to side movement. I am redoing mine now to make them vertical and hopefully get rid of this very scary problem.

Considering that the picture algranger posted (post #3) is of my truck, I feel I'm qualified to answer a few things.

First, I agree with Wheelingnoob. Mounting the shocks like that reduces their effectiveness on the road. If you need to mount them on an angle, it is better to mount them angled towards the front or the back of the truck, not towards the inside.

Two, 12" shocks are not enough for Chevy 63" springs. Here is a picture of me trying to stuff the corners to see how far the suspension can cycle.

As you can see, the 12" shocks in the rear are limiting the axle.

Three, buy good shocks. Those Rancho 5000s on the truck are junk. I like Bilstein 5150s. You get what you pay for.

Mix n match of RUF and other leafs to get the desired flex. I really can't remember exactly what was in them anymore.

FYI, with RUF you can max out a 12" shock pretty easily if you set your truck up for too much uptravel. Even with only 4" of compression, leaving 8" of droop, I still managed to rip my shock mounts off. I used Ford F250 mounts bought new from a dealer. But like everything it was a learning experience. Unfortunately, I learned how to make flexy springs before I knew how to keep everything under control.

When I do it over, I'll be using extended shock hoops and 14-16 inch travel shocks.
