Shock length question

This may well be the wrong place to post this (so I put it in general tech too ).

I'm planning to lift the rear (as well as the front) of my tacoma about 3", using either all spring, or a half spring and half shackle. What lenght of shock should I use in conjunction with this. I guess I mean how much travel should the shock have. Is 8" enough? too much? not enough?

Thanks,
Ian

Best bet is to measure after the install, but if you want to get the shocks ahead of time. Measure what you have not, compressed and extended lengths as well as how much of that travel you currently use. Then, with 3" of shackle or spring lift, you can figure that much longer on the extended length (over what yoyu use now). So for example if you shock extends to 24" but your current springs only pull it out to 22", you would need 25" extended length or more (22+3) not 27" (24+3). If your current shocks limit the down travel, then use the actual extended length with the shocks disconnected.

Then see what shocks are available in that extended length and see how the compressed lengths line up. Depending on how soft the final suspension is, you may be able to still fully compress the springs (like stock) in which case you'll want close to the stock compressed length (again what you can actually do).
