Roof Box and Off road

Anyone have any experience using a roof box (ie Yakima Space Booster or Thule equivalent) while off-roading? I am prepping for a trip into Mexico and can use the extra space. To me they seem better than a rack as I don't have to deal with rain issues.

I use one(15 cu. Yakima) for family trips on the LC but none which are offroad trips so far. I agree that it seems like it would be a better box to use than an open rack system. The only thing that I would be concern about using a closed type box is when going offroad. Preventing the cargo inside from moving around would be my biggest concern. But, if you're just going to put sleeping bags and other soft goods up there, then I would think that it would be ok.

I use a Yakima Space Booster...So far, I've had no problems except for the truck being WAY too tall with it on. I usually put the lighter weight stuff up top, to keep my COG down.

At Pismo, however, I almost went crazy from the constant rattling it produced..so fill it tight!

tex,

i've had my thule summit box for over a year now. i've used it on two trips so far. once on a road/car camping trip to yosemite and most recently, to death valley:

as you can see, it got a little dirty no mud inside b/c of the overhanging lip.

like gapguy, i put only light, bulky stuff up there. duffel bags, sleeping bags, bedding, pillows, clothes, etc. it really frees up cabin space. if you can find one used, jump on it.

sweet guys, thanks. Yeah I was just going to off load my clothes, tent and sleeping bag from the main section so I can put those heavier things like the hi-lift, 2nd spare and possible winch near the center of gravity.
