Permanently locking 1st Gen Tundra in 4wd
I have a 1st Gen Tundra Limited. Its had a hard life. 320,000 hard miles...beat up and butchered but the 4.7 runs like a top. I'd like to lock it in 4LOW permanently, manually if possible. I know it can be done at the differential...but the the Transfer case actuator is bad and that's where I need the advice.
Its not in 4wd currently. Its stuck in 2wd.... which is worthless for what I use it for. Hilly, muddy farm...towing things at creeping low speeds, and idling along with fencing gear slowly along a steep hilly fence row.
I've had it in 4wd for going on 6 years now, so I thought I'd see if the actuator would still work...it stripped the plastic gear when i went to try. There are no junk yards that have one for 200 miles.
I want to spend as little as possible and lock it into 4wd LOW permanently, and continue to use it the same way I've used it for the last 6 years, until the end of the life of the engine or drive train. Does anyone know how to do this? Similar to the easy fix on the front actuator...clamping the front differential shift fork in place with a hose clamp.
Before I get any of the "just fix it correctly" replies.
This thing never leaves my property or goes over 10mph. Its generally the rescue vehicle for other equipment when it gets stuck or needs tools taken to it or repaired. Its for pull starting old tractors or bringing tools in to hard to reach places. It hasn't touched pavement for 6 years now...and wont ever again. Essentially i use it like a slow tractor that seats 5. If i have to spend $100 on it, I'm considering it totaled and taking to the scrap yard.
Anyone with redneck engineering advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
