klunking tundra
When I use the 4wd high and shift out of it my transmission to klunk when shifting into 3rd gear. It seems to do it more when there is no pressure on it like going down a hill. Can anyone help me on this as I don't want to do damage. It a 2000 model Tundra with 83000 miles. Thanks

Sorry I don't know what this would be (too many things it could be) but my experience with race cars and motorcycles tells me one thing for sure. Try to find a Toyota specific mechanic (sometimes a dealer but more often a one person independent shop) that knows the trucks well. The independents may just be getting sharp on these Tundras as there are more and more of them coming off warrenty. Such a person is worth their weight in gold so you don't spend cash fixing things that turn out not to be the clunk you are hunting.

So I take it you have a manual? And when you downshift into third (with 4WD on) it clunks right?
I don't quite get what you mean, but I can tell you that the Tundra is an electronic controlled locking differential to initate the 4wd, when the 4wd releases, it does make a clunk sound and that is normal (but that's if only you turn off the 4WD). Remember that 4WD is only part time and you really don't want to be driving too fast with it on (no more than say 50 MPH).

Thanks for responding.I understand what you are saying but the problem I have is after 4wd is disengaged and it might be as long as the next day when the klunk happens. It make me think that the sensor is not working right. It can happen 50 miles after I've turned off the switch usually from 2nd to third or it might be at lockup. It will do this several times until it finally quits and everthing is back to normal until the next time I need 4wd.
