I'm modifying my suspension and I decided to go with OME for all corners.
I'm not sure though which spring type I should use in front - 881 or 882.
Apparently 882 is recommended for heavy bumpers with winches.
I do have the ARB front bumper, but I don't have a winch.
I plan to buy winch, but it's down on my list - probably next year.
Any advice if whether I should go with 881 or 882?
BTW I'm aware of SWAY-A-WAY existance.

I just upgraded from 881's- 882's w/ an ARB bumper and no winch in our 4Runner. It rides GREAT, but the front still seems to have more lift than the rear. I have the heavy lift springs in rear as well. I'm hoping it will " settle " over time.

 

I just put 882's on my rig with ARB and winch and it rides so much better then it did with the 881's and stock bumper and the front is now level with the back.

 

If you get 882s and don't have a winch, you will blow grease IMO. The 882s are recommended by OME for use only with a bumper/winch, heavy weight up front. A bumper alone doesn't weigh much more than the stock one, but the winch adds at least 75 more lbs. I had 881s with no bumper/winch and then put the ARB/M8000 on there and it sagged. I put 882s on a day later and WOW, what a difference. I am sitting level and the ride is awesome.

I would get the 881s with the bumper and just sell them and upgrade to 882s when you get the winch. You'll have no prob selling the 881s when you get ready.

I ran 882's for a year with the stock bumper and had no issues with my CV's. Now I have my ARB and warn 9000 and it rides good. I have gotten all four wheels off the ground and it lands smooth! I say get the 882's, winch or not.

No did not get a deal on stuff had to pay $$$$ but I'm set up now and that's all that matters.....Going in today to Slee's to get manual hubs put on. Leaking at the inner CV
and just want peice of mind that I won't have any problems down the road.

What type of manual hubs are you getting? Taco or the ORS kit?

 

On a 3rd gen the manual hubs are $$$$$ but if I had the $$$$ I'd do it in a heartbeat...

 

They are ORS hubs and kit and I got a deal at Slee's Offroad in Golden
I was able to get it for a good deal since Ben that works there was taking it off his girlfriends truck. The only thing that wasn't brand new was the warn hubs other then that it was all new shafts and high angle boots.....Sweet

I'm thinking about manual hubs down the road myself too.

 

I had a set of 882's on Bil's sitting here for a while. I bought them used from a board member.

I just slapped them on the other day to see what it would be like. I thought it would be too much for my CV's. But, their not. In fact, I only get about 2.5" of lift. I think the Bil's may be completly extended, thus limiting the 882's from achieving their full lift. Probably not an ideal set up. But this is just one of those "experimental" things.

Anyway, my point is all of this depends on what shocks you run as well. 882's with Bil's ride nice on the road and only yield 2.5" of lift. I'm sure they will be stiff as board in the rocks though. But I don't plan to use them there. I'll go back to my squishy stock coils with spacers for the rocks.

 

882's are truely hit or miss IMO. I had them on for a week (no bumper/winch) and they were hell on my CV's, but I do know of others that have used them without any problems.

 

I think the added weight of the bumper and winch makes a lot of the difference and just how much you have to stretch your boots when you put them on, whether or not you stretch/deform the OEM bands. Mine were burping, but now have stopped. But I'll keep a close eye on them and if they leak some more or do anything else funny, we'll be regreasing and rebanding those puppies.
