The Official Ifs Sucks Thread
#82
all im trying to say is its bull to generalize that ifs sucks. yes it does for crawling im not saying it doesn't but it out does a solid axle in some things. its like saying a solid axle is crap and is useless because its not good at whoops and jumps. all im seeing is its ok to generalize ifs but not a sas wow thats hypocritical isn't it. each one has its pros and cons, and to me a sas is for crawling and ifs is for speed, whoops, and jumps. look at deathrunner people want to do a setup like him becuase he can do it both well. i just cant see a sas working well going over whoops at 55.

I'd like to see IFS rig do this...

Each suspension can be taken to the extreme. With enough money, both work well. Just depends where you want your ride to go when you are done emptying all your pockets.

no but really thats what i was saying in my post that each has advantages over the other so how can one be better if they both have big down falls now if one could do it all then sure the other would suck but thats not the case

Okay.
First of all, this thread was, as far as i can see, started to be a joke. IFS sucks from a guy who has thousands into a LT kit? Its a joke thread.
TC started a different thread talking about LT. A few of his friends, myself included, questioned the decision, based upon how we wheel out here in colorado, and the trails we've watched TC conquer. That turned into a SAS, IFS pissing match, with others, who really have no idea what the history of the group here is, bashing on people they've never met.
LT is AWESOME. I love the way it looks, and there can be no denying that it rules the highspeed offroad world. No doubts.
However, for us in colorado, we are dealing with rocks, and high traction surfaces. This breaks parts in a hurry. Rocks need lots of travel, and stability.
And there is also no denying that many of the SAS's done here are done becasue the internet said it was cool, with a stock toyota housing, and you are absolutely right, it is silly to say IFS is weak, then be okay changing stock birfs. But, IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING, you put in a cromo front end, and you really aren't going to break stuff.
None of us is going to talk TC out of what he wants to do, but what happened in the last thread was that people misconstrued constructive critizism based upon actual experience with both set ups and wheeling with TC personally, as IFS bashing.
Is IFS awesome in some areas? You bet. Is a live axle awesome in some areas? You bet.
Like Jim said, IFS will take him all the places he cares to go now. My truck is stock IFS. It is double locked and it has lots of gearing. It goes lots of places. However, even Jim's truck isn't totally comparable, since he has a third gen, and actually a decent set up.
Stock first and second gen IFS sucks balls. If you drive it in the rocks, you cannot avoid bending the hell out of the steering. All of us have done it. You cannot avoid breaking axles no matter where you wheel, mud, rocks, desert. I can change my busted CV in likely half to 1/4 the time it takes to change a birf. I don't even have to take the wheel off.
I'm glad this thread is here, and Seth, thank you for getting the pissing out of the tech threads. However, lets not confuse being critical of the problems with IFS as being not tech. When i read a tech article, i want to see all the pros and problems associated with said issue, not just the positive stuff.

How many Baja racers do you know run the Baja with 4 wheel drive and then go rock crawling, besides Donahoe Racing? It's a plain matter of physics that an IFS 4x4 has limited amounts of travel and articulation because of the CV's and the design. Solid axle's have their place and IFS has it's. They both excell at what they were designed to do and work fairly well at other aspects, however, neither excell at both.

Sorry, but 2nd gen IFS blows goats. I get a whopping 2-3" of upward travel with IFS now. It's friggin garbage.
That's why a SAS kit is in the mail to me right now. WOOT! What IFS people want an IFS 3rd with 5.29's and a lockrite?

i'm all about ifs here, i wheel with my buddies and most of them have SFA Jeeps. we crawl. we do high speed trails, and there is no doubt that when the 2 of us with 4runners (my 2nd gen and a 3rd) put it in 2wd and do a high speed run, we OWN the SFA trucks.
i take my runner to the desert and run it over dunes and all kinds of stuff in an effort to catch some air. yes i break things. and i love it. LT is in the plans. it's what works for me........to each his own.

Really great how we have gone from stock suspensions to bolt on kits to complete high dollar, purpose built custom stuff.
I laugh when people with new trucks and open diffs tell me IFS is holding them back. It is gearing and lockers that lack at that point.
I laugh at people who tell me IFS will hang in rocks with solid axle trucks because mine sure didn't.
Anyone here actually wheel a double locked IFS truck on more than bunny hills or is that going to get us too close to facts again?
