New to Toys....
Hey everyone,
I'm totally new to the toyota world. I just bought myself an 85 pickup with the 22re motor and 31's.
With it's current configuration, it doesn't accelerate very well at all. How have you combated this lack of power? Should I address the gearing, or the engine?
As far as the engine goes, it's burning a little oil, but seems alright otherwise. I just drove it home for the first time, so I don't have a lot of experience with it yet.
Please let me know what you suggest the needed mods are.
Thanks
Jesse

it's not really neccesary to regear if your only running 31's... as for the oil burning mine does too and it a 85 4runner.... i talked to someone on the message board and they suggested a product next time i change my oil... it was something oil stabilizer.. i forget the whole name though... but they said do an oil change and add a quart of that and it should make it better.. and im also gonna start running 10w40 or 20w50 because i live in az and in the summer 10w30 just isnt cutting it

If your looking to improve performance, a LC Engineering header and 2-1/4" exhaust system (freeflow muffler and cat) will liven up your truck. Asking for major horse power from a 22RE is kind of an oxymoron,
but you can increase it.

descendents,
I recently had the head pulled to fix a major oil leak between the t'cover and head. My next door neighbor is a exhibition drag racer who is sponsored by Lucas oil stablizer, so I'd been getting the product for free. When the valve cover was removed, there was a heavy jelly residue filling the depressions in the top of the head. It was so thick and heavy, the cam lobes were actually making troughs in it. The valve cover was off in 2001 for valve adjustment, and it was clean then. This might be an isolated experiance, but I won't be using it in the motor again. I'll stick with straight 10-W40 Valvoline from now on-
I have had very good results from the same product when used in the Tranny, T'case/Crawler and Diff's. I noticed a large decrease in temps from all of the above. They run much quieter too-
