got the shackle hangers in yesterday...

Here's how the springs sit unloaded. The front spring-hanger is a beefy mutha' but we're a little concerned about final shackle angle being too shallow.

Here's the axle sitting ready. Knuckles turned, 5.29s installed and Sky Hy-steer arms loaded.

That's it for now, I'll post up later progress.

Thanks Cebby. No, I'm not doing all the work myself. I'm not a proficient welder/fabricator by any means. I met a guy on the local 4x4 forum who has done a few SASwaps and we've been doing it together.

Regards,

Warren

Never
I have to much $$$ into the rig as is.

If I get serious enough where I actually need a solid axle, I will hunt for an '85 rig with one from the factory.

Now that the kids are grown and both have cars, I don't need 4 doors anymore.
This rig will have to go some day, and of course it will be replaced with another Toy.

Maybe even the FJ62 I'd like to get, which has a solid axle on them.

His avatar is a second gen rig, and he's working on a first gen. I'm assuming it's a second vehicle. The axle is a standard toyota axle.

And now for my question, are those Sky's latest version of his steering arms? If so is the top surface level with the ground or at the same angle as the kingpin surface? Can't tell in any of the pictures I've seen of them.

Hey guys. Sorry for the delayed response, I've been away for a week.

Yes, my sig pic is my 1990 but I bought this '86 about 4 months ago to build up a little.

The axle is out of an '85 Toy and Shane, I'm not sure if my billet pitman arm is the brand new one or not. I ordered the kit before the end of April while it was on sale complete for $500. The arm does not appear to sit level with the ground.

I'm being held up right now by caliper bolts believe it or not but I'll post some more pics tonight hopefully.

Take care,

Warren

Just doublechecking here, I was asking about the steering arms on the knuckles, not the pitman arm. The issue with their early design and some others' similar designs is that if the top surface of the arms are at the same angle as the kingpins (ie not flat) the potential exists to run into problems with the tie rod ends binding as the suspension flexes.

Instead of the arms looking like this (viewed from the front of the axle) --- ---

they looked sort'a like this \ /

That slant in turn used up some of the rod ends' travel causing them to hit their travel limit too early. Only a problem on the draglink, but still a big problem.

I believe it, my swap is currently being held up on a frickin' u-bolt flip kit. Hoping to get it done before the big run in August.

Well, turns out that "rollin' by Wednesday" was a little optimistic. Shocks are being held up by customs and brake caliper bolts were backordered holding up any real progress until today.

Got the brake lines run...

and fitted some 35" MTRs.

and yes, the Ranchos are on backwards. I've seen a few people run them this way and it worked out that the wrap-side wouldn't fit well into the closed spring hanger box.

More pics soon hopefully....when the shocks arrive.

I need to rustle up some coin but I want a SAS in the near future. IFS makes '86-'94.5 trucks ride better? BS, it's a pounding ride, and really jiggly too (from really mushy fact. bushings throughout). If I'm gonna have a pounding ride, I'd rather have a solid axle. I like the hybrid one from All-Pro Off-Road with the way-sick F-series knuckles and bearings and ˟˟˟˟.
