If you want to do it right, get the Porsche CV's they are BURLY. I think You can still break the actual axle but that is harder. The CV is substantially weaker, I believe.

You can get them through Protrux www.Protrux.net about 1,000.00 per pair

For steering check out Total Chaos' heim joint steering steup. About 1,000.00 also and might as well throw on the Chaos Idler Arm

If you're building a fast truck...an SAS is no good. If you're gonna crawl, 2300.00 is quite a bit to blow on IFS.

Once I blow my cv's I'll do the Porsche thing, but I think my stock stuff will last for a long time. Same with teh steering upgrades, when I cross that bridge.

fwiw i have the TC idler arm now. it's seriously beefy and looks indestructible. i highly recommend it over the cheapo stock part that died and cost me two sets of tires.

I dont have 2300 to blow rigth away man, If i did, ide have an SAS. Im tryin to run 35s and not have my IFS hate me. Im not gonna be doing anything real FAST offroad, Mostly just crossin streams, and going through shallow mud and over logs. But nothing real fast, or no sand dunning. And i'll work on a profile

Ok, I thought someone else would bring it up.....A month or so ago the CV topic came up and someone else posted a link to a middle option between stock cv's and the Porsche cv's he was happy with them. If you search for it you will find them.

Truth be told, if you drive carefully and stick to 33's or less, you probably won't break much or often.

i have snapped 2 stock CV axles, (one CV, one outer stub). i did this while on 31's. since then, i have turned in my steering stops a bit, and changed my driving style. i dont flog it as much but more or less finesse it, the 4.7: gearset has allowed me to wheel with less throttle and less speed, so it cuts down on the carnage. now im running 33"s and i have ac couple trips under my belt with them and no carnage as of yet. later on this summer, im probably going to swap out the front truetrac for another lunchbox locker so we will see what that does.

i do carry spare TRE's and a spare idler arm with me on the trail.

tacoma 750, i would run some 34x10.50LTB's if i were you.

I think those total chaos heims are 385 each and you need 2.
Deathrunner- I was looking at your IFS stuff the other day, and dude, your truck is awesome! that jump vid was cool. I was thinking sas, but I do more long multiday, not very hard wheelin, but I like to drive fast! Every now and then I get in the rocks, but nothing the stock IFS had had much trouble with. I think the TC kit will be in the distant future.

On another note, I would think that no matter what there will be a weak link in the steering somewhere, no matter what parts you upgrade. I would rather replace a 40$ Idler arm, than beef it up and have to replace a steering box, or tie rod etc.. my .02

BruceTS gave me faith in the IFS setups. Once I saw what he was doing with it, I knew I had to try it. It's expensive, but so is this hobby. I am very pleased with my outcome.

You have a good poitn about weak links. There will always be one. ANd a buitl weak link is always more expensive to replace. BUT, if you build your truck for things stronger than what you do, you probably won't cross that road.

one more thing to think about, even if you get high strength axles, you still have a small ring and pinion, which isn't the best for big tires...
